Hi,
I am thinking of setting up RAID on my SF314-57G laptop(RAID 1 or RAID 5). However, when I get to my BIOS>Information>SATA Mode, it is Optane without RAID and I cannot change it. Hence, I am wondering if I am looking at the wrong place or this laptop model simply does not support RAID. I could not find any motherboard manual from Acer so I am turning to the community.  Thanks in advance.

Have a look at this guide of how to setup RAID-1 "How to set up RAID 1 for Windows and Linux" here: https://www.pcgamer.com/how-to-set-up-raid-1-for-windows-and-linux/

Thank you for the quick response. However, I do not want to use Windows Storage Space or mdadm as I would like my raid array to be accessible by both Windows and Linux, so onboard FakeRaid is my only options. However, I could not locate the SATA mode option in my Bios menu, so I am wondering if my Acer Laptop support onboard FakeRaid. Thank you.

@RJ008 I thought the SF314-57G models came with only one drive. Does yours have two? You need two drives for RAiD1 and three for RAID5, at the minimum.

I am sorry for being unclear above, but what I meant was setting up external raid storage to get both redundancy and speed. Is it possible to raid 2 or 3 external drives in a way which gets recognized by both linux and windows? Thank you.

That's a toughie... Easiest is to use a RAID enclosure, so the striping is done in the box rather than through the computer. Both Linux and Windows allow software RAID in the OS, but they use differing methods and differing file systems, so not terribly compatible with each other. The last time I setup a RAID for both OSes I used an older server and installed FreeNAS on it. That allowed both OSes to create volumes in their native filesystems, and just had to jump through hoops like SMB to expose those to the 'wrong' OS.

Thank you for your response. Hmm... is it then possible to do it using FakeRaid as mentioned in this article above? Thank you.

That's a little iffy when talking about external drives. "FakeRAID" is actually "Software RAID" where the processor is used to write data to multiple drives in a RAID like way. That can slow your system down when writing and even a little when reading, but when doing the reading and writing over a USB or network it is really exacerbated. Best is to have the external hardware do all the RAID stuff for you and only do data transfers over the USB or network. Needless to say it's possible to do it, just a long way from optimal. The other issue is still the same, Linux wants its own file system, Windows wants its own.

Hmm, then I think I will look for an external raid controller. Thank you so much for your help. 😉 BTW, an external raid controller will be compatible with both windows and linux right? Thank you.

I think for that model and all swift 5 or 7 only 1 Fastest NVMe PCIe x 4 was more than enough.
Put the SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus 2TB on your laptop setup on AHCI mode was the best choice for it.

Yes, and external RAID box will be just fine with both Linux and Windows.
