Acer Swift SF314-57G - cannot format existing partitions using Windows setup or Linux parted

My ACER Swift SF314-57G is equipped with a 512 GB Kingston NVMe (RBUSNS8). The laptop crashed with a BSOD, after this it seemed that the drive C: on the NVMe went into some strange kind of "R/O"-Mode.

After some attempts to fix this, I decided to reinstall the laptop and restore the data from a backup on OneDrive.

Now Windows 10 setup shows the existing partitions on the 512 GB NVMe, but all attempts to format them are answered with a format falure (error code 0x80070057).

I tried to clear the partitions using a current arch linux iso (after changing the disk mode to AHCI with the Crtl-S trick in Firmware MAIN Menu), but also ended up with access errors.

Is there any tool I could use to boot from to diagnose the NVMe disk and eventually wipe it out/reset it? Or will Windows 10 setup work, but needs e.g. adding a driver before starting installation (although I cannot remember to add a driver during the first install).

Any ideas are highly appreciated.

  • How is the ssd being recognized in the bios information tab? I ask this, because I think there may be a problem with the ssd firmware.

If you boot from a Windows install flash drive you should be able to use diskpart to clean all partitions off the disk. If that works you can then do a Windows install on the unallocated portion of the disk (which is the whole disk) and it will create the needed partitions for you. If either step fails when you try it it's likely a sign that the SSD has failed, though potentially it could be a bad firmware load on the SSD as egydiocoelho suggests.

Thanks for the quick feedback. The HDD Model Name in the BIOS is "KINGSTON RBUSNS8154P3512GJ1".

NB.: BIOS is V1.09, current is V1.14, which calls for an update. However the only method for an update I found was that Floris_Yebisu_BIOS_V1.14_EC_NB8511_114_20200506.exe program, hwich however requires a working WIndows installation on the laptop. On my damaged system it fails with a driver load error.

Thanks for you hints: When I use the rapair option to start a windows command shell, I can start diskpart.

List disk then shows the NVMe disk as disk 0. However

    select disk 0
    clean all

again fails in my german windows with

Fehler in Diskpart: Zugriff verweigert (error in diskpart: access blocked).

I fear  this all finally points in the direction that the NVMe switched to read-only mode after some internal error.

  • When you access the diskpart, does the ssd disk size appear as 0 bytes here?

Actually the size seems to look right here with 476 GB.

So you can override the partition locking with
    delete partition override<br>
Instead of the clean all option. Just select each partition first, the put the command in and it should allow things to work as you expect.

Actually the delete command report to be successfull (see below), however when I list the partitions afterwards, there are all still there.  Rebooting into Windows setup also still shows the three partitions. So it seems that the command fails, but does not evaluate at some point the results of the operation.

  • I think the ssd may be in trouble. What happens when you disconnect and reconnect the ssd?

I have not tried that so far. The laptop has still warranty and at least the user manual does not document the replacement of the NVMe, so I would like to avoid  a discussion with Acer's service about what the enduser is allowed to do.
  • What happens when you use the clean command on diskpart:
    diskpart
    list disk
    sel disk x
    clean

It is important to remember that this command will delete all files on all partitions. Therefore, do the procedure only if you have already saved your files.

Unfortunately I once again get "Fehler in Diskpart: Zugriff verweigert" (Error in Diskpart: Access denied). Seems to be a case for a warranty repair at Acer service.

But thanks for all recommendations I got!
  • You're welcome, my friend. I really think it is a problem in the ssd.
