HDMI ports output DVI signals only

I have an Aspire TC-885 (DT.BAPEK.003) which I have been using plugged into a Samsung TV (LE22B450C4WXXU) for the last year, HDMI port-to-HDMI port.
As of today, the TV turns on and displays the message "Check signal cable". I have tried 4 different HDMI-to-HDMI cables across both HDMI ports on the PC (the TV only has 1 HDMI port).
I have also tried all 4 HDMI-to-HDMI cables plugged into a HP EliteDisplay E231e monitor via a branded HP HDMI-DisplayPort adapter and nothing works.

The only thing that does work is a HDMI-to-DVI cable, plugged into the HP monitor and either HDMI port on the PC. This works whether it is used alone, or as primary or secondary with the Samsung TV (which doesn't work either alone or with the monitor).

Any ideas why the PC's HDMI ports can output DVI signals but not HDMI, and how to fix?

HDMI contains digital video and audio, while DVI usually only carries video. If you use these adapters or cables, they will transmit video but not audio.
    The
HDMI-to-DVI cable is wired to give you the video.

How to Troubleshoot a Faulty HDMI Connection with a Laptop or Computer

If you're attempting to use a PC or Laptop as a source component, make sure your computer settings designate HDMI as the default output connection. If you can't get an image from your laptop to appear on your TV screen, try these troubleshooting tips:

    1. Boot up your computer with the HDMI cable connected to a TV that is already on.

    2. Boot up your computer while the TV is off and then turn on the TV.

    3. Boot up your computer and turn on TV before connecting the HDMI cable.
