Hi All,

New to these forums, this is a question and also a bit of a rant so please forgive me, I got my new helios laptop 300 yesterday and decided to set it up today. After setting up windows I intended to do two things:

Check linux compatibility.
Take a back up image of the hard drive.

After looking at linux and checking the partition manager the Hard drive is not showing, I go to the install option just to make sure aswell and still get the error. I have seen this issue before at work simple fix in power options change it to ACPI. I boot into the bios options and there is no power options and I can't even scroll down to change the secure boot and TMP settings. Wondering what the issue is look into this a bit more. I then discover that Acer have actually locked out the advanced settings. This issue also stopped me from installing windows on one of the computers I had at work. I don't have a windows USB laying around to check so I am assuming it is the same issue with this. Is this the case that the bios option is locked out. Is there any way to show the advanced options just to make that one change without having to flash the bios chip in order to get access to something that is normally there by default. I have never heard of any manufacturer locking out these settings and even the older acer laptops my parents have its not locked. I am like a kid on a strop because I'm being told I can't do something :D.

Basically I'm asking if someone can confirm that the bios is locked and if there is any way to change the power settings? If it is locked its ridiculous, in a sense I am being limited in how I maintain my device, and i was planning on installing another drive to go linux in the future. especially the price of this device.

Apologies for the rant.

Any information/advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards

Hi, the bios is locked. You can isntall linux and you don`t have to touch ACPI. You have to change the sata operation mode from rst/raid to AHCI. To do that perform the steps below (if you don`t have windows installed you can skip everything but point 5):
    1. Click the Start Button and type cmd
    2. Right-click the result and select Run as administrator
    3. Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal (ALT: bcdedit /set safeboot minimal)
    4. Restart the computer and enter BIOS Setup
    5. Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI from either IDE, RAID or RST with optane. Only if no option in BIOS present - Go to BIOS screen, move to Main tab, press Ctrl+S buttons together, press F10 to save and exit, AHCI option should be available in Main tab.
    6. Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
    7. Right-click the Windows Start Menu once more. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
    8. Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot (ALT: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot)
    9. Reboot once more and Windows will automatically start in AHCI Mode
