I have 2 of these laptops and am using 1, so i removed the 2GB ram and added it to the main machine, however it is not showing in the BIOS.

I have also swapped them in the banks to ensure they are seated properly too.

What else can i do?

Based on this thread it can take up to 8Gb ram (https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/537714/need-to-upgrade-ram-on-acer-aspire-e1-531?breakffcache=b35ec)

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, this model supports faster dual channel RAM which can sometimes create issues if the modules are NOT a matched pair of the same capacity. A matched pair of 4GB modules are preferred for 8GB total maximum. Jack E/NJ

    Thanks JackE,

    It is actually this model.

    Acer Aspire E1-531-B9602G50 15.6" Intel 2.20 2GB 500GB Windows Win 8.1

shouldnt the fact that they are unmatched still allow it to be identified and run. Just not as optimised as a matched pair?

Should or shouldn't are the magic words. Dual channel mainboards can be touchy with unmatched modules due to inability to sync properly. They work fine with a single 2 or a single 4GB DDR3 module. Or a matched pair of each for either 4GB(2+2)  total or 8GB(4+4) total. Anything else, like 6GB(4+2), likely won't work without a lot of blue screening if the BIOS actually accepts 6GB which more often than not it won't.  Sorry. That's the way it is. A matched pair of DDR3 laptop modules are pretty cheap these days.  Jack E/NJ

Good luck. BTW, the biggest bang for your buck be replacing that 2.5" HDD with a 2.5" SSD. Jack E/NJ

Is is just a SATA connection? i have a 100gb SSD i bought years ago when they first launched but like my wife says, i buy with the right intentions but never get to do what i plan due to all the stuff she asks me to do.

Yes. SATA3. Just about any 2.5" SSD should work. Jack E/NJ
