My model (Nitro AN515-43) came with a 512gb SSD. I would like to probably increase the storage space by adding an HDD probably 2 or 3TB.

Limit of the 2,5` SATA  SSD/HDD is 2TB. Check if your current SSD is NVMe, if so you can add one SSD (up to 1TB) more on the second m2 slot which is SATA  only.

I've never heard of hardware limiting drive capacity. I thought it was just the OS max partition size that reduced the usable drive space but that can be fixed by creating another partition on the same drive, can it not?

Hw can`t work without fw and in fw you can limit whatever you wish... and you can try for yourself with 3tb or 4tb hdd  to see if it works...

I'm just confused is all. What I'm asking is could he not add a 4TB SSD, and if the limit is there, just create another partition to use the remaining space on the SSD or does Acer's hardware really have a max on SSD/HDD capacity that it will not recognize?

Yes, as answered previously 2TB on the 2,5` slot and 1TB on the m2 slot

I'm struggling to find that info anywhere on the internet. I would think those limits would be readily available if it were true as it is with the max supported RAM capacity. Even searching for hardware limiting drive capacities only provides info that in past OS's a person can do as I say and just create more partitions on a drive larger than the operating system will recognize.

I plan to buy another Nitro 5 when the new line is released and upgrade it with a 4TB SSD so I guess I'll let you know if you're correct when I do.

Sure, I will be glad to find out if I am wrong or not.
