    Hi Jack,

I disconnected the HDD and tried to boot from the USB drive. It is still going to:

Default boot device missing or boot failed.
Insert recovery media and hit any key
Then select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media [ok]

I tried both USB ports on the laptop and both recovery USB's that I setup. I also tried booting up one time without the HDD or the USB and got the
    No Bootable Device screen.

    Thank you

    Hi Jack,

I disconnected the HDD and tried to boot from USB again. Still taking me back to this screen:

Default boot device missing or boot failed.
Insert recovery media and hit any key
Then select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media [ok]

I tried two different USB drives with Windows 10 recovery and also tried all of the different USB ports on the laptop. I also did a startup  without either HDD or USB plugged in an got 'No Bootable Devie' logo. Thank you

How about going back to your earlier legacy mode test with the USB stick but with the HDD still disconnected? Jack E/NJ

    Hi Jack,

I looked for the Legacy option in BIOS Boot Tab. Only option is still UEFI. Thank you

Yeah, the legacy overlay is  being phased out. Have you tried to set and save BIOS defaults yet by pressing F9, then F10? Jack E/NJ

I just pressed F-9 in BIOS and it took me to "Setup Configuration" Load default configuration now? Y or N. I choose Yes and think it may have reset some things we previously changed. It still did not offer a Legacy mode. I also tried to reboot to USB after F-9/F-10 and still getting sent back to:

Default boot device missing or boot failed.
Insert recovery media and hit any key
Then select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media [ok]

    1.  On a different computer, use the Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to download the ISO

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    2.  Use rufus to create your Windows 10 USB drive...with rufus settings:  GPT, UEFI (non CSM) FAT32

    https://rufus.ie/

    3.  After you successfully create your USB drive, insert Kingston USB in to Acer laptop's USB port
    4. Turn on computer and boot the USB by tapping F12 at Acer logo.
    5. If you need to backup important personal files, you can do that from command prompt (click "Repair your computer" instead of "install")

    https://appuals.com/how-to-backup-files-from-command-prompt/

    6. If you want to install Windows 10, then select Custom installation, and you can delete all of the partitions on the Acer laptop's HDD (which will wipe the HDD) and then after you delete all of the HDD partitions, click "Next"

    7. If you would rather order your original Acer OEM recovery media from Acer....

After your computer is stable and working properly, I would recommend updating the BIOS as your BIOS is very old.

If you still have problems, you may need to replace the HDD.

If you're under warranty, you can contact Acer.

At best, the BIOS firmware has somehow been corrupted. If the machine is out of warranty, the back cover & battery pack must removed in order to disconnect the BIOS coin cell from the mainboard. It's two mainboard terminals then  need to be shorted out to remove all charge from the BIOS chip to try to force it into a default state.  At worst, the mainboard is toast. Jack E/NJ

Thanks @JordanB . But we've been mostly down that route with the media creation tool itself. https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/835759/#Comment_835759   The way it's behaving it's unlikely that the Rufus route will yield a much different result. The BIOS recognizes the all the internal and external bootable drives, it just doesn't want to hand off the boot process to them. Jack E/NJ

    OK @JordanB . Don't think that's been tried yet. Jack E/NJ
