Normally, if the bios is assigning the wrong boot device, you would end up at a black screen that says something like "non-system disk".

Turn on your system keep pressing F2 key you will boot in bios then Find the boot menu in the bios, and make sure the drive with your operating system is first on the list.

Already tried that, bios doesnt show up. Just a black screen

AV41Medicit >I just purchased an Aspire 5 (A515-54) >>>came with a kit to install a 2nd hdd, which I did (1TB seagate firecuda). I followed the instructions provided by ACER>>>

egydiocoelhodid you use an antistatic wristband or glove? the computer just doesn't stop working out of nowhere. Did you touch any component on the motherboard?>>>

Did you use a wristband and disconnect BOTH the charger and battery pack when you first installed the seagate? At any rate,  I suggest that you quickly button it back up in the original as-received factory hardware configuration. Then return it ASAP to the vendor as defective for a refund or exchange before the vendor's RMA returns policy period expires. Usually only a few weeks. Otherwise arrange for ACER warranty repair service pronto.

Yes, I used anti static precautions. I contacted Acer support and they're having me ship it back to them for repair (on my dime :/). I'm hoping they can repair it without the mvme in it. I removed it because I have people's personal information, as well as my own on it, that I cant remove before shipping it. I think if they can get it just to the bios, Id be good from there.
  • after the repair, post the result here.

First double check to wiring that connects the base unit with the screen. Maybe the display just isn't getting connected.

Are you trying to boot it up with the chassis open or closed? Technically should work both ways at least mine does try and disconnect/remove both the m.2 and the hdd and reset bios to defaults (assuming you have access to the bios then connect/insert them again

Thanks for suggestions guys, I appreciate them. I opened it up one more time after being off all night and unplauged. Display connections seem ok and intact. One thing i did notice, and seemed strange was that the wireless network card was still hot to touch. Weird. Could a faulty card be causing my problems?
  • Perhaps! Have you tried to disconnect the wireless network card?

Yes with no joy. I am also wondering if the bios is corrupt? I think that might be last try at this. I believe to process is to remove the battery, insert the bios USB and power up holding the FN and ESC keys. Is that correct?

Check if you are able to boot in safe mode.
Turn on your laptop keep pressing F8 then go to troubleshoot→advanced SEttings→startup option→restart
After restart press F4 to boot in safe mode

Ok. I took it back to the seller and exchanged it. Got the new one out of the box, and using the same antistatic measures as before, installed the 2nd hard drive. All went well and is working fine as far as I can see....with one exception lol. The wifi seems to drop sparatically for no reason? I went in a changed the power settings for the adapter so windows wouldn't turn it off, but its doing it. Anyways, any helpful hints on that would be appreciated.
I just want to thank all of you for your helpful and insightful input while I was struggling. It was a big help.

Open DeviceManager again. Click network adapters folder. Right click wifi adapter. Click properties. Click advanced tab. Click preferred band. Try 2.4GHz band. If still no joy, try 5GHz band. Jack E/NJ
