AL2032w does not detect DVI signal

Hi,

 

When I power on my PC, my AL2032W does not detect the DVI signal and simply displays "No Signal". I know the PC has powered up successfully as I can clearly hear the Windows 7 Welcome jingle. If I then shut down the PC using its power button, the screen flickers grey momentarily and the green “DVI” label appears briefly in the top right corner. It seems to have detected the DVI signal at this point, but does not power on quickly enough to see the Windows shutdown screen.

 

If I then immediately power the PC back on, the display appears correctly, I can see the POST screen and the Welcome screen appears a few moments later.

 

If I then power off the PC and leave it for a few hours (for example overnight), the problem reoccurs.

 

Basically, the monitor is unable to detect the DVI power on signal, but does detect power off.

 

This monitor has worked perfectly for many years, so I am not sure what might have broken to cause this and why leaving the monitor off for several hours has the effect seen.

    It could be a couple things honestly.

     

    Here's a list of possible problems:

    1. If you're using onboard graphics connection the PC motherboard could be going bad.
    2. If you're using a dedicated video card the port on the card or the card itself could be going bad.
    3. The DVI connection on the monitor could be going bad.
    4. The DVI cable could be going bad.

     

    Troublshooting:

    1. Try connecting with the VGA connection to see if it works.
    2. Try a new DVI cable.
    3. Hook the monitor up to another unit with the same cable to see if it works after it's been off for a while, since that's when it seems to occur.
    4. Try a different video card, if using dedicated.

    Hi,

     

    Thanks for your response. I am using a separate 6850 graphics card (I don't have on board graphics). The card does not have VGA. I have tried a different DVI cable, but the issue remained. I tried the second DVI output on the card, but the issue remained.

     

    I then tried a different monitor (a Dell) and that worked fine, suggesting the AL2032W monitor was at fault. However, when I tried the "faulty" monitor on another computer it worked fine, suggesting the monitor was OK.

     

    When I try the AL2032W and the 6850 in another computer, it works fine. This suggests both the monitor and graphics card are fine.

     

    So, only one specific combination of computer, monitor and graphics card seems to have the issue.

     

    I still suspect a monitor problem, since it works fine once it has “warmed up” and all other components have been shown to work fine. I have Googled one article which sounds like my problem…

    Hi,

     

    Further testing may have located the issue.

     

    If I power on the monitor before the PC and just wait a bit, the monitor goes into power saving mode as expected. The power light turns solid orange. When I power on the monitor, it does wake up, sort of. The power light starts flashing blue. So it has noticed the DVI signal.

     

    Listening carefully there is a faint clicking sound coming from the internal speaker, even though the audio is not connected.

     

    If I wait a further couple of minutes, the monitor springs into life. After bit more research, I found this article...

    which seems to report very similar symptoms, with the cause being faulty capacitors on the power board.

     

    In any case, it looks like a new monitor or a bit of patience are the only options.

    Acer monitors generally carry three yesr warranty's, is the monitor still in warranty? If so, give them a call (800.816.2237) and have it serviced.
