I have an old Aspire 5536-5044 with a black screen problem.  Tried all other options (external monitor, RAM replacement, static discharge, button battery replacement, others... etc...).  I'm going to try BIOS upgrade as a last resort.  I downloaded version 1.11 from Acer support, but I don't know what to rename the file before starting the upgrade.  The laptop runs, but the screen is completely black, so I have to use the FN-ESC-ON option.  HELP!  I can't find clear step-by-step BIOS upgrading instructions for the 5536.

You really don't want to try and update the BIOS blind. It is too easy to brick it! Much better will be to diagnose the screen problem to see if it can be fixed for a reasonable cost. There were no BIOS updates to fix a display problem like you are seeing, so the BIOS update won't help even if you do manage to get it installed without being able to see what you are doing.
If I were guessing I'd lean more toward a problem with the AMD Radeon chipset, which would want a motherboard replacement to repair. If it were something easier like a backlight the external monitor would have worked.
