I've been wanting to upgrade my system's gpu to a GT 1030, but I realised that my PCI slot is too small. Does my graphics card need to fit in the slot, or does it only need to fit in my computer case?
(The slot is around 10 cm, and the card is around 15 cm)

Exactly! And the connector size and position are standardized, so you only really need to know the position of the back of the card and the top edge position. So measure the first from where the bracket is on the back of your computer until you can't get any more space in the front, and the depth of the case to make sure it won't bump up against the cover.

You have a standard x16 slot there for a GPU. Remember that the cards are longer than the connector that fits into the slot... Here's a diagram of a typical GPU (in this case a 1070, but you get the idea).

So that would mean that the connector needs to fit in the slot and the card needs to fit in the case without obstructing anything?
