You need to connect the printer to Google Cloud before you can print.
    1) download canon print app on your smart phone
    2) hook printer to your WiFi using the app (its in the paper instructions
    3) print network test page by going to screwdriver icon on printer then through the menus
    4) go to IP of printer in web browser on Chromebook
    5) login with username ADMIN and password canon
    6) select Cloud print on left column and register printer to your email
    7) when you print for first time it defaults to PDF change it to MX492
Note that this assumes you have Internet at your house and an email account...

Well thanks for trying. I assume this list of Herculean tasks(for someone like myself) means that ; No . Just running a printer cable between the two will not work. Now if will excuse me, I have a printer to beat to death with a Chromebook.

Yeah, it's IMHO the biggest drawback to weigh against the lower cost of a Chromebook. In most OSes you can just connect directly, but in a Chromebook everything has to be done through the Chrome browser so they don't have to deal with creating drivers and such. It's not quite as Herculean as you suggest, just go through it one step at a time. Start with the printer getting connected to your network, then register it with Google Cloud (instructions for both of those should have come with the printer. If not they should be online on Canon's website). Once it's registered you can print any time both your Chromebook and printer are turned on and connected to the Internet.
