I am not a gamer (not even casual) and have only 4 GB RAM installed (plan to upgrade to 20GB) but two graphics chips/boards: Intel UHD iGPU(0) has 1 GB RAM and dGPU(1) Nividia Geoforce MX250 has 2 GB RAM but I cannot get dGPU to work on anything (set different programs in PhysX Nvidia control panel but Task Mngr. always indicates GPU 0). There is no Intel UHD control panel. Is there a way to switch permanently to dGPU 1 perhaps Update Nvidia N17S-G5 VBIOS to 86.07.91.00.0D Date:2020/01/09 Version: 1.16 Vendor:Acer Size: 13.6 MB? I read on this forum that my model Insyde BIOS does not have a GPU switch option.
Windows System Info reports for dGPU (Nvidia) 1: Color Table Entries Not Available,
Resolution Not Available so apparently color and resolution is completely controlled by iGPU 1 (Intel UHD) and my dGPU is stricktly used for gaming? This laptop configuration is marketed as middle class, multi-media (not a gaming laptop) and having a high end dediated graphics board that I will never use seems like such a waste of money spent.

Go to Control Panel > Manage 3D settings and change settings to 'High performance NVIDIA" if you want any of your programs to use the NVidia GeForce MX250 then change that in "Settings" either to Performance or On which will utilise the MX250 but doing all this, it increase power consumption and heat for only a small performance gain (if any). There are allot of tutorials and advice that you can lookup, its up to you. • I do not recommend that you update the bios to version 1.16, as the update for the nvidia N17S-G5 refers to the mx350 video card. Have you put the notebook to high performance in power options?

Makes no difference, playing  video and Task Mngr reports only GPU 0 is active (Intel UHD) in power settings only Intel is mentioned, looks like DirectX is not installed on my system?

Ironic that Acer installed only 4 GB memory on my laptop with x64 Windows but 2 graphics cards of only one (the smallest) is active

    Good evening Puraw !

    Starting with the basics ...
Update the Nvidia and Intel HD Graphics drivers.
Remembering that the dedicated GPU will only be activated if the device is connected to the power outlet and with a high performance plan set in Windows.

    Hi MaClane,
I updated all my drivers manually (except BIOS), Intel as well as Nvidia, even had Microsoft remote support doing some of my updating, none of the GPU drivers from Intel or Nvidia direct will be accepted by Windows10 1909 and I have the latest versions on the Acer support driver page. I created a new High Performance power plan and I am on AC power now. I set Nvidia GPU to Movies and TV in  PhysX, my only Nvidia control panel that I have for GeForce MX250 but it will only allow integrated graphics (Intel UHD) for the majority of the listed programs (Edge is the exception and will allow the Nvidia GPU), This is what I see in Task Mngr. whatever I do:

That Nvidia dedicated graphics board I have installed in my Aspire 5 laptop is absolutely useless for a non-gamer, just a waste of extra money spent, the cheaper models 54 (without G) or 53 with only Intel UHD would have been better, maybe a plastic top but with louder sound too.

On top of all that I am stuck with a 1GB SATA1 snail drive (cheapest HDD on the market) and only 4 GB memory that I have to upgrade to 20GB for my x64 Windows10. I don't want to install a SSD as I will have to move all my programs again, took me a while to get that going. the WEI rating in WINSAT for my laptop is 5! just because of the HDD and 4 GB memory, the Intel cores rate top 9.9, how can Acer market a configuration like my model?

Have you ever managed to manually configure a video card manually on the nvidia control panel?

The only control panel that comes with Nvidia GeForce MX250 on the Acer driver support page is  PhysX version 8.1.956.0 and that I have tried out (all settings) for weeks without any results. How much battery power does that GeForce GPU board consume? Can I disable it in Device Mngr.? Would that save battery power?

Thanks Steven, I ran The Chess Lv 100 program and also added the game in PhysX (my Nvidia control panel) and that app can run with GeForce MX250 but all other programs listed in PhysX including the default video-TV viewer only accepts integrated graphics (Intel). At least I got my Nvidia now working:

When I play chess, both GPU's run at the same time possibly because I was replying to your post in Edge...

I got Nvidia to work with only one program on my C:\ drive, Chess Lv 100 but then Nvidia shares the GPU's with Intel UHD (50-50) I would not call that "dedicated" and none of my video viewers and Multi-media playback apps work with Nvidia so it is obvious that Windows gives priority to Intel UHD GPU....

The Nvidia GeForce Mx250 is a power hog, I played The Chess Lv 100 game for 1 hour on battery and ran out of power, so the dedicated GPU works also on battery but not recommended. I will now turn it off by setting integrated GPU for all apps in PhysX Nvidia control panel. I don't want to completely disable it Device Manager as that may cause a PCI slot error.

I do not recommend disabled you any of the video cards. When playing, let the battery charge 100% and use the laptop connected to the power adapter.

That is why the Intel CPU/GPU like an Intel Core i7-10510U CPU (which is one of the CPU's on an Acer A515-54G-70AG uses one of the Intel UHD (Comet Lake) GPU's (don't know which CPU/GPU that you have?) and takes priority over the Nvidia GeForce Mx250. If you want to use the Nvidia GeForce Mx250 for games or Chess Lv 100 game then plug the laptop into the mains or if you want to play that game on battery, then change the settings in the Nvidia control panel to play the Chess Lv 100 in the Intel GPU.

Multi Media is my main interest with some chess games and Office apps. all work fine with the Intel UHD GPU making the GeForce MX250 absolutely redundant, especially if it requires AC power (portable notebook, lol) and if it still consumes some battery power when not used I wish I could rip the Nvidia board out of my laptop. My processor is 10th gen. i7 10510U.
  • I do not recommend that you disable the intel graphics card. Now, if you want to use the nvidia video card, follow the tip from colleague steven.

I was referring to the Nvidia GPU card not Intel UHD (nothing would work if I would disable the Intel GPU).
The WINSAT graphics and system score went down from 5.9 to 5.7 after I disabled Nvidia GeForce MX250 so I guess I will leave it running. Note the very low graphics WinSAT rating for this model (6 out of 10) also reported by laptop reviewers last year.

Intel Graphics UHD control panel is in Windows Start menu under the letter I. There can control Intel UHD graphics and change settings.

For programs can  simple go with mouse on icon of program in desktop you want change and click right click to open little menu and select run with graphics processor, then choose High Nvidia or integrated UHD graphics processor, which one you want to run defult or only for 1 time when open. That way can all programs run GP which you want. Intel is defult becuase is more economic and can do more work from battery, so if programs start with UHD processor and than  need more graphics processor laptop switched auto to Nvidia processor how i know thay alwas run both just start with UHD if software see that programs no need better so for game alwasys start with Nvidia. If only read on internet is better and save more battery if us UHD.

@Dadi No Intel UHD Control Panel in start menu on my laptop, maybe I should reinstall Intel drivers to get it back, I searched my laptop but no Intel UHD anywhere. I already did what you described in Nvidia PhysX Control Panel and set everything to Integrated GPU (Intel UHD), apparently all I can do with that Nvidia GeForce is watching Netflix and play 3D chess but that needs to be done on AC power: There are 2 GeForce MX250 cards on the market the high power 25 watt and the low power 10 watt and I think I got the 25 watt card in a portable laptop that is meant to work "on the go" (planes etc.)
