Can I connect an Acer laptop that came with a 3G connection to a Mobile Hotspot that is 4G?

My Acer notebook became inoperable last year and I bought a new laptop.  I also bought a Mobile Hotspot with 4G to connect to the Internet.  It is one which will let me connect multiple devices.  I decided to get the Acer repaired because I liked it's portability and I was told I could use the Hotspot to access the Internet on it.  I tried it and it tells me it is connected but when I try to open a web page it tells me it is not.  I tried a couple of troubeshooting methods but they did not work.  Windows Update and Windows Essentials will not open because they say there is no Internet Connection.

The 3G connection in the notebook is a direct connection to 3G service.

If you wish to connect to a 4G hotspot, you will use wireless to connect to the hotspot.
