CPU rises when laptop is plugged in...should I worry

Hi everyone.

I have an Acer Predator Helios 300 and I bought it around late December. I love it.

I'm just a little worried that it's heating too much.

Recently I've found that unplugged and idle, the CPU sits at late 40's to mid 50's (degrees celcius) but once plugged in to the mains it instantly rises to mid 70's even whilst doing very little.. For a while I wondered if it was because of my plugging it via HDMI to my TV or an external monitor but I've since realised that this makes no difference.

Even now, all I am doing is sitting online typing this out with Predator sense open in the background and the CPU is sat at 77 degrees.

Now i have unplugged it, and it drops within seconds to 58 degrees then sort of remains jumping between mid 40s and mid 50's. Is this something I should worry about?

Ideally I would like to be able to occasionally run some demanding programs (games for example) with the unit plugged in and not have to worry about frying my laptop's insides.

Can anyone tell me if my laptop may be in trouble or is this normal.

Thanks in advance

Jay

  • The temperature decreases when using battery power, because the cpu and gpu clock also drop. The battery will never be able to provide satisfactory performance. Now, as temperatures rise to 78ºc when connecting the power adapter, it is still within what is considered normal, in my opinion. However, I suggest you check out this topic: Red-Sand ThrottleStop Undervolt Profiles Pre-Made — Acer Community
I would also like to know the model of the laptop. Example AN515-51-75KZ.

PH317-53-798L I think that is the model number (on the underside just above the S/N and SIND?)

If these things are normal, I can live that, I just wanted the opinion of people who know better than I. I can use a laptop competently but when it comes to the inner workings I am afraid I really know nothing.

I will try the link you supplied - thank you for taking the time.

  • I would worry if the temperatures were above 90ºc. However, did you check the link I sent you about undervolting?

@JayHurst1984   Up to 85"ish its fine more than that consider repasting if you can yourself without voiding your warranty or send it back to get it repasted and as @egydiocoelho said above it will underclock on battery you should only use it on battery in emergency for gaming only on ac with 100% battery before starting any games
