Problems connecting external drive to USB-C on Nitro 5 AN515-53

I bought a SATA III to USB-C 3.1 adapter for an external drive. The light for access comes on, but not the light for power. The hard drive works fine in the 3.0 port and 2.0 ports with a Y connector, but not in the USB-C port. Does the port put out less than 800mA or is there some setting I need to change?

In general, my power settings are set to performance and there are no options in the UEFI like on other computers I've had.

Sorry but the USB C 3.1 on your model does not support "Power Device". It can be used to "Charge" a device but not "Power" a device.

So what are the technical details on the port? All I can find advertise it as a full USB-C port. And does that mean it can only transfer data or provide power but not both at the same time or is it just a glorified cell phone charger?

It's not an Aspire and it still doesn't tell me anything technical like mA or data transfer (which everywhere says it does support). Calling it USB 3.1 seems like shady advertising if all it can do is charge things.

It is capable of data transfer but your question was to do with Powering your Device. Data transfer rates are gone into in detail in this article
