I'm Looking to Upgrade the Processor in My Verition M265

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade the processor in my Acer Veriton M265 desktop. It has the E5300 Pentium running at 2.6 GHz. I saw a post about a similar subject but needed some more information before buying a new chip. A response to the previous post listed the processors that were compatible with this computer as shown below:

The Q9550 series shown lists the L2 Cache as 6 meg, but the Intel site states that the Q9550 series chips have 12 meg of L2 Cache. Are the Intel chips with the 12 meg of L2 cache going to work in my computer? Also, since the Q9550 series states that the base frequency is 2.83 GHz, will this chip work in my computer with a 2.6 GHz frequency?

Will it work? ... Yes.
But there are several issues:
What FSB support on your motherboard?
I would have to replace the CPU cooler with a more powerful one.
The PSU would possibly have to be replaced due to the demand for increased TDP.

The motherboard for this model supports up to a C2Q Q9650 listed in the service manual and tested by Acer.

From your post I'm assuming that I can't use any of the processors from the list in my original post. Is this because of power dissipation issues (65W for the 5300, vs.95W for those in the list) or are there other operational features that make these processors incompatible? As I understand it, power dissipation is mostly dependent upon how much processing the chip is doing. My application will mostly involve surfing the web, reading email, watching videos on YouTube, and reading PDF documents. These seem like tasks that don't demand a lot of processing power. In my application, will one of the processors from the list still work?

Also, the speed of the E8600 is listed as 3.33 GHz, whereas the E5300 is listed as 2.66 GHz. Will the MB clock change to 3.33 GHz when the new E8600 is installed. (From this question, you can see that I don't know much about motherboards).

As another question, do you know if the MB in the M265 supports dual-channel memory? I don't see a setting to enable it in the BIOS and there is no use in spending the money for two matched memory modules when I can just buy one 2 GB module to upgrade the memory to 4 GB.

Dual-channel technology does not depend on Bio configurations, but on support from controllers.
To activate the technology, just use RAM banks in identical pairs.

Based upon the replay that I made to Steven above, in my particular application, will the Q9650 or similar work without making a change to the cooling system? I don't want this small upgrade job to turn into a major operation.
