Hi JackE - When I checked the pc this morning chkdsk was at 12%. So I powered off and put the HDD from my old E 15 in. Booted up and now runs fine. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. This 70+ (old as dirt) disabled green beret cheesehead is doing his happy dance (it's butt ugly to watch, I won't send the video). Thank you again!!!!!

    (1) Full model number?
    (2) Where did you get the ACER recovery USB?

    (1) Can you access the BIOS menu by pressing F2 when you first turn it on?
    (2) If yes, is the HDD or SSD shown in the Information tab?
    (3) Make sure the F12 and D2D options are enabled in the Main tab
    (4) Does the Boot tab show the HDD or SSD, USB FDD, CDROM, Windows Boot Mgr, etc?
    (5) Is this a new replacement HDD or SSD?

I changed the bios to allow a boot from the recovery drive. It's now in step3 - restore progress.
It does run for a while.I didn't try changing F12 or D2D (whats that). This is not a replacement hdd. I did not check the items in step 4 yet. I will keep you posted, and thanks for the help it is greatly appreciated.

If it's the original HDD, the D2D function (disk to disk copy) allows you to reset the system to factory fresh state from a hidden recovery partition on the original HDD using the ALT+F10 cold boot reset method shown in the video below. The F12 function allows you to boot from different drives from a cold boot. Jack E/NJ

the recovery usb gave me a finished message at step 4. I removed the usb and clicked OK like the screen said. Got an acer splash screen and now I'm getting restore in progress message. Now i'm getting data error (cyclic redundancy check) and several other error mesages at Sytem.io. I click OK on the error messages. Its now in Acer Recovery Management (V12.0.13). It shows restore progress 0% after 20 minutes. Am i not patient enough?

Leave it plugged in and walk away from it for a few hours. May be an indication of an eminent HDD failure. No big deal because new and faster HDDs and  SSDs,  likely a lot bigger than you've got in there now, are dirt-cheap nowadays. Why are you trying to reset it in the first place? Jack E/NJ

Welllllll - I tried to update to version 1909 windows 10. Everything that could go wrong did and after a month of messing with it I joined the community to get help. I'm sure that I messed up partions. That's why I ordered the acer recovery usb and you can see how that's going. I will let this bad boy sit over night and see what happens. Thanks for the response Jack I appreciate it.

Well, it's good that you got the recovery media anyway just in case the partitions are messed up (easy to do with the recovery partition) or the HDD hardware goes south. Jack E/NJ

    Good afternoon Jack,
The restore process failed. I did get to the reset option and that failed. You mentioned earlier of the possibility of HDD problems. I was able to get to the command prompt and entered -
chkdsk C: /f/r/x and hit enter. It found 752 bad clusters and is currently fixing them. Most of them have .SWM extension. I also remebered that I have an old ACER E 15 that has a good HDD in it. Sooo - if this doesn't work I'm going to swap HDD's and see what I get - unless you suggest something else.

Hi there! That message on the bad clusters made me wonder how that hard drive is actually fairing...

You're able to boot off of a USB stick, which is good for what I have in mind. Question, is your data backed up or whatever is on the hard drive is still valuable to you?

I could build and upload a very basic WinPE image you could put in a USB stick to boot from, because I'm guessing you can't even get into Windows at this point, right? What I'd put in there would be a basic file explorer (so you could copy data off of the internal hard drive to an external one maybe?) and the trial version of a hard drive monitoring software. It'd be just a trial, but it would allow you to see what's up with that hard drive. Even a lowly 1 or 2GB USB stick would be enough to put what I'd upload.

As long as you got to the X : \> prompt to run chkdsk, you might as well run 'sfc c : \ /scannow' too for  good measure. Then run chkdsk again. If it picks up more errors, then it strongly suggests the HDD's head is hitting the platter. Jack E/NJ

Thank you for the offer. Last night on my little Swift 1 I did exactly what you have proposed. My chkdsk is still running fixing stuff on my E 15. Once that is done I will try a boot off of my new USB. I will keep you in the loop on any fix that I may find to work. Again Thanks

I run scannow earlier and that completed OK.But once chkdsk is done I will rerun scannow then chkdsk again. I opened up my old E 15 and pulled the HDD to use as a last resort. I'll keep you posted. These utilities run a long time. Thanks for the response Jack.

Congrats. Did you had two of them? What's wrong with the old E15? Jack E/NJ

I had an old e 15 that I had dropped and broken. The case is shot but most of the parts are still good so I used the HDD from that.
    Works good. Thanks
