Hi there,

I have/had an Acer Swift 1 13.3 Inch Full HD Intel 1.6GHz 4GB

My glorious son spilt a drink on it during the festive season. The laptop is dead and I'm willing to accept that but I took it to someone to retrieve the data and he said it was impossible because the hard drive is fused to the motherboard in these models (those might not be the words - complete hardware novice). Is that really true??

I thought I was backing up to OneDrive but when I went to check it was turned off in May for some reason. I'm gutted about some of the things I've lost and would love it if someone could tell me that there's an obscure solution to this tragedy!!

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed that someone out there can tell me about a miracle...

There are solutions, but likely to be more expensive than you wish. The drive is soldered to the motherboard as your technician suggested. I don't know your model number and there are lots of different Swift 1 models, but yours likely has an eMMC module. A technician with surface mount soldering skills can remove that from the motherboard, put it into a socket and read the data off it. That's a pretty big job and will take some time, plus it requires some specialized equipment.
Another possibility would be to recover the laptop itself, drink spills on their own don't always do extensive damage. Disassembly and cleaning can often get enough of the drink residue off to allow the system to boot again. If something got shorted then replacing the burned component(s) might resurrect it, at least long enough to recover the data. Again this is going to take some time, so won't be cheap.
