Has anyone ever reported a similar battery fire for an older Extensa unit.  The only thing I can think caused it is that the unit was on its side and not laying in the normal flat position.  I was under the understanding that the position was not critical as long as the air vents were not blocked.

There is not much under there except the battery so I doubt the position had anything to do with it. The battery is a six cell Lithium Ion and when they get old they can grow lithium crystals internally. If the crystal grows in just the wrong direction they can penetrate the isolation between layers, causing a short. That might have been the root cause. Hopefully no one was hurt?
