Does anyone know the type of SSD in the Aspire A515-54-708W (is it standard SATA or M.2?  And if M.2, is it NVMe?

    Hello,
    The SSD is a M.2 2280 PCIe X4 NVMe of 512GB.

CPUID reports that CPU code name as "Kaby Lake -U/Y" and benching results are comparable to i7-4790.  Far from impressive for a 10th generation i7!

The BUS is PCIe X4... but the installed drive (KINGSTON RBUSNS8154P3512GJ1) is SATA (2 notches).  Furthermore, the 2nd drive connector (shown in quite a few videos about The Aspire 5) is ABSENT!  And that' s not all : the BIOS interface is like the good old DOS bios!  I replaced the SATA SSD with a NVMe SSD (WD SN750) and I used the AHCI setting in the BIOS)  It worked.  I then upgrade to BIOS to version 1.12.  Big mistake :  AHCI boot config has vanished!!!  Any ideas?

    Hi,
Saw Laurent's post about BIOS 1.12 "Hidden features".  I have the same issue.  Following Laurent's advice, I tried "Control+s", to no avail.  Could you please be more specific: what does "in the right tab" refer to?  And is it "Control+S" (capital S, therefore Control+Shift+s"?
    Thanks

Don't worry it wasn't a mistake upgrading to 1.12 if the problem you have is the storage operating mode, pay attention to the 2nd change that BIOS introduced:

    1.Update BIOS code.

2.Hidden SATA Mode in BIOS setup menu and can press "Ctrl+S" to show up.

Simply get to where the setting used to be and press Ctrl+S, it'll show up once again and you'll be able to select RST+Optane or whatever the alternative to AHCI was. Keep in mind though that Windows ain't keen on interface changes for the boot drive, so if your boot drive is the SN750 and you had Windows already installed switching to the other option may require you to re-install Windows (or maybe add RST drivers if they weren't there to begin with and use something like Macrium's ReDeploy for it to accept the change).

By the way! That Kingston drive is not a SATA one but 2x NVMe (compliant with v1.2 of NVMe) ;)

@aphanic It is not always necessary to reinstall windows when the user changes the RST WITH OPTANE mode to AHCI. However, before making this BIOS change, the user must enable safe boot on windows. Once you have enabled safe boot, simply restart windows, change sata mode to ahci and then save the change. Windows will install the ahci driver on safe boot.

    Thanks, Aphanic.
I had finally succeeded by pressing "Control+s" as you described.  BTW, do you know why there are 2 notches on that Kingston drive?

    No problem ;).

Two notches, you're referring to where it's connected right? Those are called keys, they're used to determine which things are supported in each host connector. For example, the socket in the motherboard has a separation to the right, it is M keyed. M keying is used mainly in NVMe SSDs that support 4 PCIe lanes.

If that Kingston SSD was the same as mine it could be inserted because it was also M keyed, but it's also B keyed. Most B keyed things are SATA SSDs, but there are some 2-lane NVMe SSDs (like that one) that have B & M keys.

There are more, but off the top of my head I just recall those and if I'm not mistaken the E key is used in WiFi cards. That's why you can't put a WiFi card in that M.2 slot, but you can in one for its key.
