Attaching a K242HYL monitor to a chromebook via HDMI has no volume.  Video is fine and looks really nice, but...no audio, and the chromebook apparently thinks the monitor should be playing the audio, because the chromebook speakers don't play.  Audio plays fine on chromebook when HDMI is disconnected.  External controls on monitor do not work as advertised in "manual", i.e., "if the OSD [whatever that is] is active, press the MINUS or PLUS buttons to toggle between the OSD options.  If the OSD is inactive, press the MINUS or PLUS buttons to adjust the volume (Optional)".  Pressing these buttons in ANY combination does not appear to do anything to volume, at least there is no on screen display indicating that the volume has been affected.  I can't tell if this is just a really poorly written manual and there is a way to adjust the volume using the buttons but that's not it, OR if the device is defective, OR if this monitor will do video but won't do audio over HDMI from a chromebook, or what.  Help, anybody?

OSD is On Screen Display, the menu that allows you to change monitor settings. Does your model monitor have speakers in it? Some do and some do not. Is there a setting on the Chromebook to select audio output?

    Hello billsey,

There is a setting on the chromebook to select audio output - it defaults to the monitor when the monitor is connected, but no audio.  The OSD controls don't allow me to control the volume or any other setting relative to audio - they LOOK like they are supposed to but no combination of clicking or selecting allows me to modify the volume.  The "manual" is of no use, the instructions it gives do not work.

So first of all we need to verify your monitor has actual speakers in it. Does it have a phono jack you could connect your phone to to have it play music? When you bring up the OSD does it have volume settings? The Chromebook obviously thinks there are speakers there, but if there aren't you'd see this symptom. If there are speakers (and they actually work, which the phone connection might tell us) then we need to look at the HDMI cable to make sure it supports both video and audio.

As I said previously, the OSD HAS volume settings.  Why it would have them if the monitor has no speakers, I don't know, but hey...stranger things have happened.  I don't see anything that looks like speakers so it probably doesn't.

If the OSD has volume settings then there are likely speakers. It's possible the cable is a video only style though. Do you have a different HDMI cable you can try?
