M.2 SSD Not Recognized on R5-571T-59DC

I no longer consider myself very tech savvy, so please bear with me. I have an older Acer Aspire R laptop (R5-571T-59DC) that I only recently felt compelled to upgrade. It came with a 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive. I would like to add a faster drive and keep the mechanical drive as data storage. So, I bought an Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0x4 internal SSD. I was able to install the 660p without much issue, however, neither the BIOS nor Device Manager nor Computer Manager in Win10 has been able to recognize the new 660p drive. The only drive that shows up in any/all those listed earlier was the factory mechanical (5400 rpm) drive.
Here is a link to the 660p SSD that I bought. Like I said, the fit and installation was no issue.

I've read through the forum here and it seems like the Samsung EVO might work, but the pins look different. Or is it the fact that this laptop does not recognize the fact that the 660p is 1TB. Maybe it is defective? Any advice would be appreciated. I don't understand anything about these M.2 drives. Thanks in advance!

I've checked that Crucial website and the only storage compatible devices they show are the 2.5" internal SSD, which would mean that I would have to replace my 1TB mechanical drive. That's not something I want to do considering there is an M.2 slot. And, per that graphic, it also shows that in Storage 1, there is an M.2 2280 SATA Gen3x2 SSD that is compatible. The 660p does state that it is M.2 2280, so I'm just confused why it isn't showing up at all.

Sorry, not sure what you mean. Do you want me to send a screenshot of what my BIOS screen looks like? If that is what you are asking, then yes, I can do that later tonight. If that is not what you are asking, can you rephrase your question? Thanks.
  • Can you upload a picture of the info tab, menu section, and sata configuration option?

    hi,

    1) unfortunately the intel 660p SSD is a high speed NVME M.2 ssd and does NOT support the lower speed SATA mode!, so will not work in this laptop

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000029732/memory-and-storage/consumer-ssds.html

    2) if you read comments on this post and this other post carefully, your laptop has an M.2 port which ONLY support ssd SATA mode
    https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/461136/aspire-r5-571t-r15-mystery-port/p1

M.2 is just the port/connector standard, and not an SSD storage communication standard, i.e. nvme or sata. For example, you can put a Wifi card into your M.2 port.

I'm very new when it comes to the newer technology, especially M.2. I had a hard time understanding it, but thank you for just stating it outright. I will return the NVMe SSD and get the SATA interface for the M.2.
