Hi. I have helios 300 G3-572 / i7-7700HQ / 8GB RAM / 1 TB hdd / GTX 1050Ti.
I want to leave hdd and add ssd 256gb, but I do not understand this well.
What exactly fits on my motherboard? I am talking about:
  • what type of key should m2 ssd have: b, m or both
  • what sizes should be in ssd: 2242, 2260 or 2280? (I do not have access to my motherboard now and I can`t know by my own)
  • which manufacturers are better?
  • what speed should ssd have to work comfortably with IDE (ex. android studio) ?

yerassyl m.2 2280 either sata or nvme up to 2tb will work you will have to clone your existing OS into the new drive with easeus partition master or similar then remove you old hdd to not conflict with the OS booting if you want to keep the hdd as recovery drive you can just get another hdd to replace it but if you still want to use it you have to format it.

I would recommend connecting it via usb adapter/enclosure/dock after you had boot windows from the cloned ssd create some partitions in the ssd (depending on the space/size you have left in the ssd you pretend to buy you can shrink or increase the space) the copy whatever you need to backup from the hdd into the ssd and format the hdd after connect it back as internal drive and youre good to go check my signature i have a wd blue 2tb if you have the budget for it go for it if your intention its gaming only but if youre into rendering works content creator i suggest you to get an nvme instead

As an example with my Predator 17 G9-791 which I have I installed the Crucial P1 TB NVME drive and used the software which @xapim suggested and I cloned my hdd to the nvme which in my case took 8 hours as the drive had 60 gig free, once the cloning process completed I turned my pc off and replaced the 1TB hdd with a Patriot P200 1TB SSD for additional space while giving speed boost for the sata 3 side of things and I did move my steam folder (319 gig) from the nvme to the ssd to free space on said drive as its a bad idea leaving the drive to full as it will affect performance. I got both drives at a local expo last weekend for a good price as it was a much needed upgrade for my laptop.
Windows loaded pretty much instantly without any issue showing the cloning process did the job perfectly and all programs start up with a flick of a finger and load time any game I put it through is a hell alot faster making the experience a joy as I don't have to wait anymore for programs to load anymore.

Metal_Masher thanks for sharing your experience and im glad to know it worked great and its true cloning can take many hours patience is a virtue but in the end its well worth the wait (i had some cases it took me up to 1 day from a normal hdd to an sshd my sata usb dock) depending on the size/speed of the drive to clone from and to :)
