i've checked my settings, updated all drivers but when lid is closed and laptop plugged in, fully charged etc, it keeps shutting itself off completely, losing us a lot of work.  how do we resolve this please?

Try unhiding and turning off fast startup in ControlPanel power button app. Double check everything is still set to sleep. Shutdown. Turn machine back on. Jack E/NJ

I have an Aspire 5 with similar issues.
I wanted to use a second screen and close the lid to my laptop and the image wouldn't stay on my monitor.
Here's how I fixed my problem:
    Control Panel > Power Options
Look for the bottom line on this screen and click on: Change Advanced Power Settings
Click on the plus sign in front of: Power buttons and lid
I chose: Lid Close Action > Plugged in - Do nothing
    Last hit the APPLY button

Play around with some of the settings on this screen and you should be able to accomplish what you need to do.
