I attempted to update the BIOS on my 64 bit Acer Aspire 5253 laptop to vr 1.18.  I had been having fan issues and overheating and wanted to see if the BIOS update might help.  After performing the update in Windows, my laptop will no longer boot.  i have been trying to update using the DOS prompt, but DOS reports that FLASHIT.exe is incompatible with my Windows 7.  ive about tried everything i can think of.  im wondering if the Acer supplied BIOS is incompatible with my laptop if if the version of Flashit they supplies is not working with the 64 bit machine,

Any help or advicee would be appreciated!  i had just put in a new hard drive and had everything running well until i decided to update the BIOS.  Epic fail!!

    Home run!!!
OMG! Guys you won’t believe. I had tried to restore to am earlier disc image prior to performing the Bios upgrade and Windows could not restore from it. After your efforts, clean install and going to Windows tools, I performed a restore from a 2/19 disc image, and it worked!

i even got all my personal files, data and most importantly, Microsoft office applications back!

kudos all around!  This was most challenging recovery I’ve ever had!

Look for a BIN, ROM, WPH or FD extension file in the DOS subdirectory of the unzipped BIOS download. Jack E/NJ

    Hello Jack,
The DOS file had a FD file,  BAT file and flash it.exe. I put them on a thumb drive and ran the BAT file at the  DOS prompt. That when DOS comes back with the response that the flashit.exe file is incompatible with my version of Windows. (Windows 7 64 bit).

    Any thoughts?

    Thx!

What is the filename of the FD? Jack E/NJ

    Jack,

I had retried the 1.18 using DOS and the FD was P5Wx6X64.fd
    No luck.

I tried all the way back to 1.05 and the FD was P5Wx6105.fd

All gave same result in DOS with it reporting Flashit.exe was incompatible.

    I’m stumped!

    OK. Try this.
    (1) Copy only the version 1.05 FD file to the root directory an empty FAT32 formatted USB stick that has an activity LED. P5Wx6105.FD should be the only file on the stick.
    (2) Shut the machine completely off. Insert the stick into a USB stick. Insert the charger.
    (3) Press and hold the FN+ESC keys.
    (4) While still pressing and holding the FN+ESC keys, press the power button to turn the machine on.
    (5) Do not let go of FN+ESC till you see USB LED activity.
    (6) If the flash is successful the machine will either shut down or reboot.
    (7) If nothing happens, repeat the same procedure in another USB port

    Jack,

Gave that procedure a try. Tried it on all 3 of the laptops USB ports. It always showed flashes on the USB stick, but then came up in Windows Error Recovery screen without flashing the Bios.

Appreciate you trying to help me sort this out!

If you got an error screen, your BIOS is likely OK. Shut down again. Then turn it back on and ***immediately*** start banging away at the F2 key. Do you get a BIOS menu? Jack E/NJ

    Jack,
Oh yeah, I can enter setup and it shows vr 1.18 is loaded. Problem is, the machine refuses to boot to Windows after the Bios was upgraded to 1.18. Since everything was working prior to the Bios upgrade, I naturally assumed the Bios upgrade killed the machine.

    I’m at a loss.

    (1) Does the BIOS Information tab fully describe the HDD installed?
    (2) Does the BIOS Boot tab also show the HDD installed?
    (3) In the BIOS Main tab enable both the D2D and F12 options.
    (4) Press F10 to save BIOS settings and exit.
    (5) If it doesn't boot into Windows on exit, press and hold power button till it completely shuts down again.
    (6) Turn it back on and IMMEDIATELY press and hold the ALT key while tapping the F10 key.
    (7) A recovery screen should appear similar to the video below. Follow directions to either reset the system to factory fresh Win7 state or refresh it while trying to save all your personal files.

    Jack,

    Thanks for your patience.

Here are some images that might help.
I did not have F12 option enabled. I did that.

Did not get the recovery screen shown in the video. The last image shows the recovery screen I get.
Everything looked OK to me in Bios setup. I did have the boot order to check the thumb drive first. I did not have thumb drive inserted while I tried the steps.

When I go into the advanced screen when Windows goes to into recovery mode, I checked the logs and all the tests Windows does showed everything checked OK and that it couldn’t find the problem.

    Hmmmm

    (1) Do you recall if this machine originally came with ACER Win7 installation DVD?
    (2) If not, can you get to the command prompt ( X:\> ) via the advanced screen?
    (3) Might as well put the HDD to the top of the boot order again.

It came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I did not receive the disks when I bought computer. I had a bad HDD crash and had a corrupted image file for my backup, so I had to start completely over. I put a new 750 GB HDD in it and then need a windows install Acer was no help there since it was out of warranty. Microsoft was no help even though I had product code on sticker on back of machine. I was able to get a Windows install and put on a thumb drive to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium and it accepted the product code from back of machine. I then had to download drivers for wireless adapter and such from Acer to get everything running. I was slowly getting everything up and running and encountered the old overheating issue where the laptop fan keeps shutting off. I thought the updated Bios Might help. Everything was looking good until I updated the Bios and then had the boot failure. If I let the machine boot all the way to the recovery tools, I get a nice windows background and I let it try to fix things to no avail. I’ve tried restoring a backup system image from a USB hard drive of the system before the Bios update. That fails as well. My last resort would be to try a complete new Windows install, but not real optimistic that it would install after the failed Bios experience.

I can get to the command prompt, as I’ve tried to reflash the Bios through DOS and kept getting those flashit.exe incompatibility errors.

I can move the new HDD back to top of boot order.

Unless you have something else to try, I’ll probably try fresh Windows install, but if it fails, don’t know that I have anywhere else to go.

    Thx!

At X:\> prompt enter the following bootrecovery commands
    X:\> bootrec /rebuildbcd
    X:\> bootrec /fixmbr
    X:\> bootrec /fixboot

If successful, shutdown and reboot. Keep your fingers crossed

Gave those steps a shot. No luck on the boot up with Windows.

Right now, I’m using the recovery tools to try and restore from my backup image file after we attempted the repair on the MBR.

I’ll let you know how that goes.

    Jack,

    Still no luck.

one interesting thing, when I ran X:\> bootrec /rebuildbcd, it reported “0” Windows installation??  Know that’s not true.

    Befuddled here!

OK. But if the image doesn't work, we may want to see what diskpart reveals before trying to re-install Win7. Jack E/NJ

Restoring from my backup image also failed even though it ran to completion. It just restarted and went back to the error recovery screen.

Go back to the command prompt, X:\>

Enter 'diskpart'. At the DISKPART> prompt enter
    DISKPART> list disk

What is the result? Post phone shot of screen if possible.
