why dont you install win 10 on it. i think win 7 / 8 keys can still be upgraded to win 10 for free.

    Jack,
Thanks for suggestion. I had originally tried that before putting Windows 7 on the new HD. I could no longer get the Windows 10 freebie and hated to buy it for this older machine. I had tried the free Windows 10 upgrade when it was available and the machine kept crashing and was erratic, so I rolled it back to a Windows 7. I had read where some people were able to still use the Microsoft download site and their Windows 7 product keys and still get the upgrade free, but it didn’t work for me.

Heh-heh. Somebody other than me made that suggestion. I would only suggest Win7 and/or LinuxMint . The latter can be configured with about the same look, feel, function & stability of Microsoft's last half-way decent Windows version, Win7. Except Mint is noticeably faster, can openly access the Windows partition in dual boot, and has utilities to run all the Windows apps that I depend on. That's a whole 'nuther subject.

    Jack,
I still had my USB backup drive connected when I ran list disk. Disk 0 is my new Toshiba 750 GB. Wonder why it’s showing 0 free space? Here’s another shot after disconnecting it:

Is the 'new' Toshiba the same HDD with the boot problem after the BIOS update? Jack E/NJ

also try to initialise your hdd  from disk part, using the clean command.
offcourse provided you dont have any vital data on it and dont mind formatting it.

OK. I now fear that your new drive's master boot record has somehow been wiped clean by the BIOS update --- another one of the sometimes unexpected side effects that can happen with BIOS updates --- and another example of why they should only be applied as a last resort to try to fix a major disabling problem.

So now off my soapbox and try to salvage things.  At the DISKPART prompt enter the following.
    DISKPART> select disk 0
    DISKPART> list volume

    What results do you see?

I think I see the problem. The system reserved partition shouldn't have a drive letter. The D drive letter partition should have the C drive letter. To be sure, we have to re-do DISKPART but with media in the DVD tray and the other removable drive tray or USB adapter removed if possible so DISKPART and we don't get confused. Essentially I want the E & F drives to be clearly distinguishable from the Toshiba HDD when we enter the Diskpart command 'list disk' since it clearly picked a removable drive as Disk 0 which is not what we want. So how do we reassign the drives?

Hold on. We wanna see the output of 'list disk' first before 'select disk'. Diskpart can get screwed up if we don't. Jack E/NJ

    Hey Jack!
i looked up how to reassign drive letters in diskpart.
You think maybe the reason it wouldn’t restore the backup disk image was because it was trying to write to that small reserved partition rather than the main partition??

Yes! Please do 'list disk' first before trying to do anything more. Diskpart is a very low level disk utility that can corrupt the drive even further if things are done out of sequence. I think we can get things back with Diskpart but not if the commands aren't done in the proper sequence. Jack E/NJ
