So I've been having this problem for a while. Dolby Audio opens up normally at windows start, but for some reason, a few months ago, I noticed that changing audio modes would not affect the sound in any way at all. I've tried to roll-back my drivers, upgrade my drivers, and even uninstall it completely and reinstall using the drivers provided on the laptop's support page.

But, I've never been able to fix it. I'd highly appreciate it if anyone can help me with this.
My laptop is Aspire 7: A715-71G-746H

Probably too late by now. But you still might want to open ControlPanel. Search 'restore point' . Click 'create a restore point' in left pane. Click 'system restore' button. Click 'next'. Check if an automatic restore point is still there with a date stamp that approximately coincides when this issue started. Jack E/NJ

I did try that when this problem originally started, but unfortunately, that didn't work

OK. If this is critical to you and if the BIOS firmware is still factory original, about the only good way to rule in or rule out a hardware issue is an ALT+F10 cold boot reset to a factory fresh state.   If it were mine, I'd probably clone/migrate the whole drive as-is to another drive via USB port (HDDs are supercheap nowadays) and then do the reset to see if it resolves the issue. If not, it's a likely hardware issue. Jack E/NJ

there is a device with name "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) OED" disable that and restart your system this will resolve the problem

Hi, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I tried this and it still did not resolve the issue, however, I did find a rather strange solution.

When I connect my headphones/earphones into the audio jack, it asks me what type of device this is. Instead of picking headphones, I tried Headset, and that fixed it. I don't understand why this happened, but it works so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thx a lot for your input guys

Great. Probably because the headphone hardware is the same hardware the manufacturer uses for its headsets with a mic. Jack E/NJ

Soooo after a while, I had this windows update that couldn't go through for whatever reason so my screen said Undoing changes for a while and when the it finally turned on. My audio problem was back.......

No clue wtf just happened there, but the headset trick is not working anymore.

Open ControlPanel. Search 'restore point'. Click 'create a restore point' in the left pane. Click 'system restore' button. Click 'next'. Choose the auto restore point with a date stamp that's around the time things messed up again. Jack E/NJ
