Decrease the size of the text in each window for Acer S271HL

I recently purchased the Acer S271HL and running Windows 7 with a Dell laptop.  I am trying to adjust my view so that I can use the monitor similar to having 2 separate monitors.  The size of the text in each of my windows (Outlook, Chrome, Excel, etc.) is too large which requires me to expand my windows beyond more than half of my screen which decreases the benefit of the larger screen and prevents the dual-monitor approach.  As an example, the text in Outlook is too large and requires me to expand my windows to ensure all of the columns will appear.  I have tried to play with the screen resolution for the monitor but that doesn't seem to help.

This might be a laptop setting not related to the monitor.  But, I didn't want to individually adjust each application as I also use the laptop without the monitor.  Any suggestions to modify settings (on the monitor or laptop) to achieve my desired view?

It's a little less polished in W7 than in W10, but in your display preferences you can choose scaling of 100%, 125%, 150% etc. Verify you have it set low and all your apps should start showing their data in a smaller font.

Thanks for your response, @Billsey - it appears I am at 100% which is the lowest (smallest?) option.  Any other suggestions?
