Was able to upgrade to 16 on the ram but when I tried to recover the win 10 from thumb drive it says issue with recovery. I swapped the m.2 SSD 126gb for a 1tb. Is this not workable?

It's better to first migrate the smaller to the larger card using a USB2M2 adapter and cloning freeware such as MacriumReflect. Then swap out the smaller  drive. Jack E/NJ

Ugh, somewhat frustrating. So cloned the 126gb to the 1tb m.2 SSD, installed but system says "not bootable". Did I miss a step?

Does the new m.2 show up in the BIOS  menu Information tab? If yes, does it also show up in the Boot tab? Jack E/NJ

No, the cloned drive doesn't appear in the bios. Or the boot options

What is the name/model of the 1TB drive? If it doesn't show up in the BIOS info tab, it's either not connected, not powered, etc. Jack E/NJ

I can see it in disk manager, macriumreflect, while in the enclosure. It can be partioned, just doesn't appear to be bootable.

Should be fine. Probably just needs to be re-seated a few times. Are you inserting it at an angle --- then gently pushing it down  --- and then holding it down with the screw? If still no joy, then re-try the old 128GB card to make sure it's still recognized in the slot. Jack E/NJ

Yes, the 128gb has been in and out a few times. It regonizes it just fine. I thought when I cloned it to the new one that the boot properties would also follow along, but doesn't seem to be working along those lines.

It does when cloning. The problem isn't the cloning job. Something's physically wrong with the card hardware when the BIOS ****INFO**** tab doesn't recognize it. The Boot tab is an altogether different property affected by OS software. Put the card back into the USB adapter and see if DiskMgmt.msc or your cloning software still sees it. Jack E/NJ

So yes I can see the new m.2 in disk management, and the cloning software clones the old drive, but once it's swapped into the laptop it's not seen. I have two m.2s I bought, just followed the video from macriumreflect on cloning and everything went as planned. But upon swapping bios doesn't see it and won't boot....

What is listed in your BIOS Information tab in the enclosed  rectangle shown below? Jack E/NJ

This is with the original 128gb. When the new one is in, it says "none" on HDD1.

Even though the largest m.2 SATA3 card listed in the specs is 512GB, the BIOS INFO tab should still list the 1TB m.2 card even if it only recognizes 512GB of the 1TB capacity.  Something seems physically wrong with the way the 1TB card is fitting in the m.2 mainboard slot. Does it seem to fit in the slot as easily as the 128GB card?  Does inserting the screw holding it down seem to feel the same as with the 128GB card? Jack E/NJ

It seems to fit just like the 128 gb card. I have two 1tb m.2 cards I bought (one is for an hp laptop) . I've tried both, a and the same has happened.

Sorry, did you check Crucial's compatibility app for this particular 1TB SSD with the A515-43 before you placed the order? https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct1000mx500ssd4   ? I just ran it for your model and this is what turned up. Crucial's suggests a few 512GB m.2s are compatible. Jack E/NJ
