You won't necessarily get better performance with a newer driver, but it might still be a good idea to update depending on how old the current version is.

On the other hand, there's no reason to update if everything works fine.

If your not having issues just stay with it you can try the latest and roll back after but my advice will always be if there's no issues don't try to fix what's not broken 😊

I never update mine :p (and my windows updates are completely disabled since first day 1809 came out via regedit, services and user group policy) my intel its still the stock from 2017 why update it if its working fine :) and my nvidia only had to update it from stock because of BF5 would require at least 416.94 minimum and thats where im at since all games run great on ultra including latest so as i said no issues at all here :)

If you plan on playing games that are released since your last driver, it would probably be worth updating the drivers. Usually, there are games that are tuned with the drivers to run better performance wise. It is usually better to update drivers, as long as you research and don't find any big issues that are happening with the driver version that you are looking to install.

NVIDIA publishes release notes for each driver update. Most users will want the "Game Ready" driver and the things that interest the user are GENERAL FIXES, GAME-SPECIFIC FIXES, and SECURITY FIXES. Most of changes NVIDIA makes seem to be game-specific. So if they don't apply to the games you play, there is no need to update.

Updates always involve the risk of regression, which can be minor to very serious. If you are a novice, I would recommend updates only when you are sure there's a big benefit. Fixing video driver issues can be difficult even for experienced users so you may not wish to take that chance.

As for speed, unless they fix a game-specific bug, very rarely are there general performance improvements that make it go faster. On the contrary, updating the driver will probably slightly slow your system simply because of code bloat. The NVIDIA driver is a giant ball of yarn that keeps growing and growing and growing. Of course, sometimes there are also regressions that cause slowdowns too.

As for never updating anything. For the video driver that can be a strategy. I completely disagree with never updating Windows. At the bare minimum you MUST do security updates to Windows if you do anything whatsoever you wish to keep private (banking, personal photos, etc). Unfortunately, Windows 10 is blurring the line between security updates and feature updates.

Thats the main issue with MS (win10) now they push all the updates you have no option to choose what and if you arent a really experience user to search for the specific KB's (updates you need) and download them and install them manually,  apart from that you have to bow down to them and install what they want you to :) this is why i love win7 you can choose whatever you want or dont want to install

In 1809 with latest security update and 1903, you have the control over installation of security and feature updates. Only the monthly malware removal tool gets installed automatically now.
