My model is a g3-571. I wanted to clean both fans out, which i did.. did everything as expected, disassembled both fans and swiped the dust off the interior vent. and tried to remove the dust from the fan blades. all was fine, blew it a bit. not too much, as i'm sure these fans can handle huge rotations anyway. nothing i didn't usually do. Also while this was ongoing, the battery was still plugged in, if that matters.

Then, i put it back together, and the only fan working was the CPU fan. I wondered why, so i figured it was the way the GPU fan wire head was put in, so i flipped the head on both sides and neither worked. I do remember while trying out different sides of the wire, i heard a little pop, and not sure which one it came from or whether it was anything electrical or just me tampering with it. Either way, this sucks as i game quite a bit and i hope this is nothing serious as surely this laptop can take a little tampering with. What is this!

I would recommend you to check if the hardware is being detected in the BIOS and if yes then set the BIOS to default configuration. Most of the times it is recommended to turn off the unit during hardware changes.

hello, thanks for your response. I checked the BIOS, no mention of fans. Configuration was defaulted, no change. The laptop was off, but the battery was in, i'm just not sure how that would lead to both fans being destroyed. If they were both working at full speed beforehand, i just don't get how 70+ euro can go down the drain so quickly over disassembly. Should i bother buying a new pair of fans even with the risk they don't work? The warranty for this laptop is US based, so nothing can be done there, and there's not a whole lot of repair / support for this laptop in my country.

Any other solution to this? I'm still using it, i reduced the CPU processing state to save some heat and it hovers around 50-60 so i'm not really fussed, but the heat sink is obviously hot. ;'(

Virmana you stated <<<so i figured it was the way the GPU fan wire head was put in, so i flipped the head on both sides and neither worked I do remember while trying out different sides of the wire, i heard a little pop>>>
Thats your reason your fans are dead as you tried to connect the positive with the negative and the negative with the positive you short circuited them the motors are burnt thats the pop you heard and youre lucky if the mobo is still working fine if you havent burned the circuit too one piece of advice if you do not know or are unsure of what youre doing dont do it yourself and even if you still have warranty it will not cover its user damaged you just voided it if you still had it my suggestion now take it to a repair shop to test the mobo fan connectors to find out if the circuit its not burned and if not get replacement fans if its burned you will need a new mobo

<<<surely this laptop can take a little tampering with>>>

PS laptops/desktops mobos are not made to be tampered with the circuits are very fragile (any electric device pcb is fragile) any short circuit might kill it for good or just some components leaving it useless and you stated you are still using it even with the fans not working i advise you not to use it at all get the mobo checked asap to see if fan the connectors arent dead and get new fans you are subjecting yourself to burn the entire mobo by using it without a working cooling system but again you do whatever you want with it i already gave my suggestions/advices now to follow them or not its entirely up to you

usually i'd leave the wires in while cleaning the fans but this time i obviously made that mistake. i may just order in new fans and see whether they work or not, and put them in original position. if any of them don't work then i'll just save up for a new laptop. and i am continuing to use it as i've nothing else, and can't be bothered to wait out some technician fixing it. what are the chances the MOBO is fried, and is there a way to visually inspect it to tell? such a tiny mistake can cost you everything, oh well. thanks for your technical answer, it's better than most answers i'd get.
