Chromebook C740 unable to Recover

My son's Chromebook does not recover after having a "chrome os missing or damaged" message. 
Managed to recover it at his school but his friend pressed ctrl+shift+t right after that (in order to enter developer mode, as he said).
Chromebook then returned to "chrome os missing or damaged" screen and hasn't been able to recover since.
Does anyone have any idea?

    Have you tried to recover off a USB flash drive yet? That will often be successful when dealing with a corrupted image.

    I see that you have tried to do power wash in a wrong way. Try to do power wash by following any of the methods below.

    Power Wash For Chromebook:
    ************************************
    Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r. Select Restart.In the box that appears, select Power wash and then Continue.


    Power Wash For Chromebook:
    ************************************
    Turn off your Chromebook.
    Press and hold the Esc key and refresh (F3) key and then press the power button to turn on the Chromebook.
    The Chromebook will boot to Developer Mode. Press Ctrl + D to turn off OS verification.
    When prompted to turn OS verification off, press Enter and the Chromebook will restart.
    At the OS verification is OFF screen, do not press the Spacebar. The recovery process will start automatically after approximately 15 seconds.
    The restore process takes about 5 minutes. A progress bar appears at the top of the screen.
    The Chromebook restarts and prompts to re-enable verification. Press the Spacebar.
    Press Enter to confirm that you wish to turn OS verification on.
    OS verification is back on and Chromebook reboots automatically.
    The "Welcome!" screen will be displayed and you can complete the on screen instructions.

    I am technical, I have followed directions explicitly and NOTHING works. Am desparate, pls. help.

    If a power wash doesn't help, and OS restore from a flash drive doesn't work then the chances are it's a catastrophic failure requiring a motherboard replacement to fix. That may or may not be cost effective if you're out of warranty.

    I have tried that, but its stuck on "Writing. 0% Completed"

    That sounds as if the drive has failed then. The drive is in a mini PCIe card slot designed for a NAND Flash Solid State Drive, either 16GB or 32GB in size. I don't know if you can upsize the drive and still have everything work, I haven't yet tried that with a Chromebook, though I would expect you can...

    Did you try to reinstall the OS onto the new drive? I wonder if it needs to be initialized in some special way... Or else the mini PCIe slot might be bad. :(
