Hello all,

I have a problem with my Acer laptop. It is actually two problems, but they might be related.
The first problem is that sometimes it doesnt boot up. I press the power button and nothing happens - no POST, of course no Windows start up, just a black screen. Pressing F2 or F10 to get into BIOS doesnt work either. Eventually, after several attempts, after removing some or all external connections, e.g. monitor, USB disks, keyboard/mouse, it would boot up and proceed normally. Once it has booted up properly, restarting it goes without a problem.
This problem is not consistent either - it comes and goes. It was gone for a few months - every start up went normally, but a week ago it came back and every time I have to power it off and on several times.
Another problem is that it is misbehaving on start up, sometimes it detects only 1 of my 2 4G memory sticks. I tried removing and plugging them back in, swapping them - doesnt seem to work. It just seem to randomly start working properly on any give reboot.

I have seen some suggestions to replace the BIOS battery (the laptop is about 5 years old), but would that make sense since the problem comes and goes? If the battery was dying/dead. wouldnt I have problems every time?
Any other suggestions what to try or check?
It is an Acer Aspire V3-772G running Windows 7 with 2x4GB of RAM and 100GB Samsung SSD for OS and software.
Thank you beforehand!

  • Hello! Have you checked if you reset the power if the problem occurs? To do this, disconnect the notebook from the electrical outlet and disconnect the lithium battery. Then press the power button for thirty seconds and then test the notebook with the battery disconnected! I think your battery is already at the end of its useful life and so I suggest you use the notebook only in the outlet and with the battery disconnected!
Try to test each ram memory stick individually and check which one has the defect! It would be interesting also, you inform the temperatures with the hwmonitor and check if there is a need to change the thermal paste of the processor!

    Hello,

I actually have been doing that for quite some time - running my laptop without the battery. I might have previously read about it somewhere. But I only press the power button briefly to discharge capacitors after disconnecting the power. I will try 30 seconds next time.
So you think a defective RAM stick might be the culprit? I thought the motherboard would beep loudly if that was the case. Anyway, I will check the RAM sticks more thoroughly next time.
The core temperatures are a bit below 60 degrees and it has been on for quite awhile.
    Thank you!
  • This problem can be caused by faulty hardware such as the processor and ram! I also suggest you test with another power adapter too!
