Hello Guys,

Do you think it would be possible to upgrade the Ryzen CPU when the 3000 series are released? What do you think is the maximum TDP that the cooling system can handle?

Technically yes that's the main reason the ryzen version is upgreadable to have a compatible socket with future series :) but can only be tested for sure when it comes out about the tdp im not sure on how much is the value locked into the bios but im sure when the series comes out it will have new bios upgrade to support the new cpu tdp's after they tested it first of course

Unfortunately, it is likely that Acer won't release a new BIOS to support ryzen 3000, so you can upgrade. As for the maximum TDP the cooling handle, I wouldn't really go for anything higher than 65W.
Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
    -Model number
    -Part number(not required, but helpful)
    -CPU
    -GPU
    -Operating system

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

Think they probably will because if they don't what was the point on leaving this unit with upgradable cpu if u cant upgrade to anything it worth it didn't make any sense at all might as well soldered same as the intel unless the mobo socket would not support it itself which that would be unthinkable again if thats the case might as well soldered it then as the only major advantage of this H500 variant its the upgradable cpu because it looses in everything else to the intel like for ex the 2 x nvme but hey im just supposing hopefully it will be like that if not i wouldnt buy the model myself if the only major feature can't be used

The reason why they left the CPU 'upgradable' is because AMD doesn't have high performance CPU that has BGA socket. Ryzen 2700 has PGA socket, which isn't for soldering like the BGA, and this is why the CPU is socketed and not soldered, not because Acer is planning to make it upgradable.

A simple google search "amd ryzen bga" says otherwise.

Until otherwise proven. 3700 holds an identical TDP to the 2700 already inside this machine. Considering that people have put in a 2700X into this machine already...safe to say it can handle a higher TDP processor too. Being that a 2700X is a 105W part.

The only point of contention here is whether or not a BIOS will be released supporting the 3XXX series. My only reservation is with the fact the 3XXX series is designed with PCI-E 4.0 in mind. Don't know how that would affect its use on a motherboard built for 3.0.

Probably there wont be any bios update to support the 3000 (cant see that happening) this was already been discussed theres no point in use (old tech) with a new tech cpu its like putting a agp 8x gpu in an agp 4x port board or vice versa (just an example) not saying it wouldnt support it it might but would never have the full potential and its bad for business the H500 Ryzen would probably be either refreshed or a brand new model would come out with another name its just my opinion anyway

Would be really nice to run out at grab a 3700x and give it a shot. Having the same 65w draw, it really "shouldn't" be an issue. Only time will tell.
