Dual monitor in linux with hdmi and VGA?

Have a Acer TC-885-ACCFLi30 Aspire TC-885
It has Dual HDMI ports that work great in Windows.
Has 1 VGA port that I normally don't use.
For new job they use some program based on Linux that currently only shows 1 hdmi monitor. They say there is no way to fix from their end.
Questions. 
1. I can get a splitter that might/might not work in the linux. 
OR
2. Can I use the vga for the 2nd monitor at the same time? 
Less cost. and have vga cables.
but I get errors when I plug in the vga telling me to use the better HDMI option.

Actually in this scenario it is difficult because without knowing the software and how it was built there is no way to offer more support.

In other applications or in Windows normally can you use the 2 mail monitors?

Firstly, the problem is the configuration of the software that it reported.
It does not matter if the base is Linux or Windows.
The probelam begins with them.
Is there no support in the company for these software?

This is because in a Linux distro it is perfectly possible to use multiple monitors.

Hello, No there is ZERO support for the program. They have no desire to update. 
Only to say 'it works sometimes, and it doesn't work sometimes with newer monitors"
So I am left to figure it out.
