Is there a possibility I have shortened the life-span of my battery?

predatorofmanpredatorofman Posts: 61Member Enthusiast
Hi all,

I  often keep my Predator Helios 500 plugged into the AC adapter because of gaming, and these three days I left it plugged in without break, because I was defragmenting the hard drives with a defragmenting software.

So,I would like to know if I have shortened the life-span of my battery because of leaving the laptop plugged in into the AC adapter for a long time?

Please tell me.

Thanks to all in advance.

@Jack22 i'm sorry but i disagree a litle bit with your statement and  @predatorofman no it wont affect the battery at all the battery will not overcharge i have mine on AC 24/7 for one year now and all fine no issues i have 6.2% battery wear according to battery bar pro which is nothing u only need to let the battery disccharge completely until it shouts down once every 3 months and charge it to full again thats the only care u have to have with your battery if you are on AC like me and out of the box for the first time charge and discharge the battery 3 times to get it properly calibrated in long term of course all batteries won't last forever but short term they last long time

Dear xapim, please tell me what should I do,because when I bought the laptop I didn't know that I should  discharge the battery for 3 times and then recharge it.

    Please help me.
You don't actually need to do that.

To clarify, battery calibration makes the battery charge(percentage) readings more accurate. It won't improve battery life or damage the battery if it isn't done in 2-3 months or if at all. You can calibrate the battery when you begin noticing that the level of charge is not displayed properly. For example if the battery is at 100% and after unplugging from the charger it drops to 95% or if it is at 10% and the device switches off without any warning, as  the system thinks there is more charge left, when there actually isn't.
Always post the following characterisitcs of the device:
    -Model number
    -Part number(not required, but helpful)
    -CPU
    -GPU
    -Operating system

Helios 300 and Nitro 5 users DO NOT update the BIOS to version 1.22 if you don't want the keyboard's backlight to turn off after 30 seconds even when the device is plugged in.

Yes, it might affect the life span of your battery. So make sure once it goes to 100% unplug the AC adapter and use the laptop again when it comes to 30% connect it and charger.

That is the usual procedure and it should be with the users manual out of the box and you can also find it somewhere on acer support help if im not mistaken but it's not mandatory its as i said advisable and as it was also said above by @ven98 it's to calibrate the battery so you will get it to work properly and charge it to the max capacity doesn't improve the battery life all batteries have their own life span some more than others there is no way to know as i said mine only has 6.2% wear in 1 year always on AC 24/7 so theoretically it should last me at least 4 to 5 years with still 70% of it if the wear keeps dropping down the almost same percentage every year theres also no way to know how it would behave the battery wear doesn't mean the battery will not charge to 100% it means that my battery started with 48.944 mWh and now i have 45.919 mWh in capacity after 1 year and in my view because they do not overcharge it's much more healthy to have it always on AC than using it on battery only and keep recharging it i might be wrong but that should cause even more wear in the battery capacity it's just my view anyway :)

So finally you are reccommending to me to keep the laptop plugged in for all of the time, right?

Yes, for best performance, otherwise the GPU's performance can't be fully utilised if the laptop isn't plugged in.

I especially mean about the battery life-span?

Battery Bar Pro is showing me battery wear of 0.5% for 1 month (1 month since I have bought the laptop) is that OK?

That is excellent. 6% per year is nothing.

Been doing this on multiple laptops over 7 years now. The max wear I ever saw was in my Asus RoG laptop from 2012 with 45% wear (45% wear after 7 years is not bad at all).
My current Predator of about 10 months is 2.3%.
