@xapim Is this a fact and confirmed cause they advertised it as two M.2 NVMe and the slot only has one notched, will M.2 Sata fits even though its using another pin variation.

Only the intel version has 2 nvme the ryzen has only one nvme and one sata this has been confirmed by other ryzen model owners who had the exactly the same issue when trying to install another nvme this is why i said and say only the intel model has 2 nvme and even so it may vary from country to country as there are many variants of the model and yes m.2 sata will fit on any nvme port as the other way what happens is that while an nvme port supports nvme and sata (4 pcie lanes) the sata port only supports sata (2 pcie lanes) it will not support nvme the fitting is the same for both only the pins change in the drive hope this clarifies it the unit is not faulty this is the way the ryzen version was made because you can upgrade the cpu while the intel you can't so there is always some stuff they take out and put into the other one to balance both models so everyone can choose carefully either have an upgreadable cpu and only one nvme or have a soldered cpu and 2 nvme slots u cant have it both ways

  • Your model supports ssd m2 2280 sata 3 or pci nvme, see: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Acer-Predator-PH517-61/99053
Have you checked that ssd is recognized in the bios information section?

Try to put the SSD in the second slot than put the original SSD and try .

    Hi @WhaleTheDragon

I suspect the issue may be due to compatibility of the SSD which you are using. Below is the specs of compatible SSD officially recommended by Acer. I have tabulated them based on capacity.

As a work around, I recommend you to try using anyone of the above recommended SSD's. That should work.

I guess you need to send the unit in to the Acer repair center to check whether the M2. free slot is working or faulty.

  • I would try to change the sata mode option to ahci, but that would break the array and could cause you to lose the files!

@egydiocoelho No problem about losing data its new laptop anyway but on BIOS in Sata mode is already AHCI is there any other way to change arrays?

The only way to change the array would be by selecting the rst with optane option again! According to the service manual of your model, you can choose the option rst with optane! Have you also tried upgrading bios and ssds firmware? Remembering that these procedures are extremely risky and may not solve the problem!
How do you test another ssd on this m2 port?

This option for RST optane is for intel only i think, my laptop is the AMD/Ryzen variant does not come with this option.

If your laptop is the H500 Ryzen version only one of the m.2 ports is nvme the second is sata only only the H500 intel version has 2 X nvme hope this finally clarifies it so your option now is either return your wd black or just clone your existing ssd into the wd black and keep the wd black as main OS drive and use the other drive as external usb drive in a nvme m.2 supported enclosure and maybe get a wd blue 3d nand 2tb m.2 sata if you still want to expand the available space same as i got for mine i could had got an nvme but didn't felt the need to because by the price of 1tb nvme i got 2tb m.2 sata and space is more important to me than speed and the wd blue 3d nand also performs very well

@xapim Thank you for the confirmation, i was actually cloning my OS drive to my SSD and then clone it to my WD Black Nvme to become my OS drive, i took your advice and ordered WD blue NAND Sata III on amazon i should received it by next week again thank you for confirming this issue i didn't want to send it back for repairs as i am currently not in the US.

@WhaleTheDragon just stated what i had read around all over the places and what has been reported by ryzen owners i myself cannot confirm it as i do not own it but according to what was previously reported all indicates that way also the ryzen doesn't have thunderbolt while the intel does but its still a a beast while the ryzen version in my view its better for rendering works and the intel more for gaming but both can do it perfectly
