I purchased this laptop about two weeks ago so I could take some online classes. I need to be able to use the speaker and microphone to be able to take mid-terms and finals online. However, my microphone is not working. I've tried installing headphones with a speaker but that does not work either. I would assume that since my laptop has a webcam and speaker that it would have a microphone -- but it's working. I can't even talk to Cortana. Any suggestions on what I should try? Thanks!

    1. Open the Control Panel.
    2. If using the Category view, click on Hardware and Sound, then click on Sound. If using the Small icons view, click the Sound option.
    3. In the Sound window, click the Recording tab.
    4. If your computer has an external or internal microphone, it will be listed in the Recording tab.

It says there is a microphone but it's not working. I've tried the troubleshooting ideas and nothing.

I tried headphones .. they did not work. So I'm hesitate to spend more money on a headset without knowing that it will in fact work. It should work as is -- the laptop is saying there is a microphone installed and supposedly it's working properly. Just need to figure out HOW to get it to hear me, a setting somewhere that I've overlooked?

I think we're getting closer. First, I don't have a "Cortana" option. Second, Internet Explorer is now "On" but says "sites still need permission."  Thank you for your continued assistance in this troubleshooting.
