Hi everyone,

I've been lurking this forum for a while now but now its my turn to seek help. My Predator 17 (G9-793-74VG) is just over a year old and I really regret not using the warranty (now expired) when I first noticed the problems several months ago. Basically what happens is that when I turn on the laptop, the lights, fan, predator boot sound and laptop sounds play, but the screen is pitch black. I've noticed alot of people on this forum have had this issue but mine seems to be a bit more strange. I've tried all the suggestions that have been thrown out there and that includes hooking my laptop to an external display - nothing pops up. I have also updated my laptop to the latest BIOS 1.14. After all that, I took the back casing off, as well as the fans to get a view of the cpu/gpu chips. I cleaned the motherboard using isopropyl wipes and a dustblower. Putting the laptop back together and booting it worked! However, I came to realise that this was actually a temporary solution to my problems. If i booted it, played games or did whatever I did with my laptop then put it to hibernate or shut down, and turn it back on, it will show a black screen again. I would then have to take my laptop apart again to repeat the same process in order to boot my laptop. It hit a certain point where my previous remedy lost effect and the laptop still showed a black screen. Frustrated, I went a step further and completely removed the motherboard from the case which involved me taking the display off aswell. To my surprise, I found some condensation of what seems to be water on underside of the motherboard (the side that has pre-installed RAM). I cleaned every corner of this motherboard with the isopropyl wipes and put everything back together again. Just a fyi, I have never spilt water on the laptop or used it in an environment that was humid so I really have no idea how there was condensation in my laptop. This time, it worked again. However, later the problems came back. It is to a point where I am completely sick of this laptop as it is such an inconvenience. It will not be an exaggeration to say I've opened this laptop at least 50 times. Right now, I am using my old MSI laptop whilst my predator sits on the side as the display no longer turns on despite all my efforts.

If anyone can assist me it would be most appreciated. My last resort would be to find someone in Sydney who specialises in ACER laptops that can fix this. (I have seeked help from 2 repair shops who turned me away).

Regards,
Will

Before you do anything else or take it apart, HDMI out to a TV for awhile to mirror the lid screen. Does the TV go black when the LCD goes black? Report back with results. Jack E/NJ

Have u tried the FN combinations (F5, F6) to see if u get any image in the external screen ? if so it might be something more serious maybe a faulty board or something also try to move the sodimm from slots if the ram or slot is faulty it might still turn the lights one but it will stay black on desktops usually beeps (in some mobos) but on laptops it's just black screen if it's the mobo u might find one second hand not easy to find and won't be cheap either but im sure there will be some refurbished ones somewhere

Well, yeah, not good if the TV screen goes black when the lid screen goes black. Intermittent issues like this are tough to diagnose. Understandable why local shops might not want to tackle it. I suggest calling the NSW ACER repair center directly at 1-300-365-100. See if you can get a real live person that'll arrange an actual diagnosis with an estimate. Might be free or not cost too much. If it's something serious, like a mainboard failure, the estimate will likely be as pricey as a refurb. In this case, I'd get the thing back unrepaired and try a solder reflow. Nothing to lose. Thanks for the input guys. I'll try contacting the NSW Acer repair centre and see where that takes me. If my laptop is too pricey to fix, should I just suck it up and get an new one? It's an absolute shame that this beast of a laptop costed me over $2000 and only lasted a year. Also what is a solder reflow?

    >>>what is a solder reflow? >>>

A mainboard chip failure is often due failure of its soldered mainboard interconnects, not the chip itself. A solder reflow can sometimes repair these loose or cracked soldered connections. Solder reflows are typically done by placing the mainboard on aluminum foil or cookie sheet and then baking it for 10-15 minutes in a toaster oven preheated to 425*F . Jack E/NJ
