R11 Keyboard Mapping is haywire

Just purchased an R11 as surprise Christmas present for partner, but once I've logged into Chromebook whatever I type produces rubbish on the screen, so that I can't even subsequently log into apps.  How is it that I can log into Chromebook OK, and then it all goes down the pan?

What do you mean by 'rubbish'? If it's just a few keys that are remapped then likely you got it set for a different language...

By rubbish I mean that the characters that appear on screen do not represent the keys tapped.  F'rinstance, 'a' might appear as 'k', and so on. and this affects every key  apart from the numerals.  The weird thing is, when I first boot up and login to Chromebook, the keys respond as they should, otherwise I wouldn't be able to login.

Further to my report above:  Got up on Christmas morning, was unable to even log-in as it doesn't recognise the password - because the characters entered on-screen don't represent the keys that I've pressed.

Still sounds like it's configured for a different keyboard. For instance, if it were set as a Dvorak keyboard an A would still be an A, but an S would be an O. I don't know which language it'd be to get your symptoms, but a powerwash should get to back to defaults. Did you buy the Chromebook from out of country?

Power washing doesn't fix the issue. I don't have different characters, thE ONSCREEN keyboard just does random junk [see 'the' & 'ONSCREEN']. I didn't do that. If I hit back space to correct it zooms through the entire paragraph, when I got the space bar it will double type the last few letters of what was deleted. I've done a Power wash, twice, uninstalled account and reinstalled it after checking for a Chromebook update, and have no extensions to cause the problem. Also, forgets passwords, won't recognize the correct one, and is as slow as a 3,000 year old turtle. This is an Acer R11 purchased at Christmas. It's about to be sent back.
