I just purchased acer chromebook spin 15 CP315  intending to wipe it and install a Linux distribution, to become a lightweight Linux laptop. I have no interest in running chrome os, I bought this laptop solely for the hardware. Unfortunately the firmware appears to be locked and I am unable to change the operating system (I have followed many online tutorials). This took me by surprise, I have installed Linux on many former Windows laptops with no problems and did not anticipate this machine being so difficult.

The spin 15 has a write protection screw on the motherboard, and there are many online tutorials explaining how to find and remove this. However I can find no information on how to disable write protection on the spin 15

The problem is not the write-protect screw. It appears that there is no firmware to convert your device.  From the supported device webpage only 2 Spin models are listed.
