I have the above listed model and want to upgrade the processor. I have a Gigabyte 1050 2gb GPU atm and a new 2tb HDD as well as the OEM one died.
All other parts are stock. (10GB DDR3 ram, current processor Intel Core i5 4440.
I am having some bottle necking and fps drop but I feel this is more due to processor load than GPU issues. The games that cause this are games that are heavy on processing power. (Kingdom Come, American Truck Sim, etc.)
I want to know what would be compatible and worthwhile upgrades. This is a good tower and has been wonderful to game and go through college with.

It also serves as the main system for home schooling my kids.

Thanks for any help! :)

    Hello,
Here are the original processors (84W) for this series:

    CPU.I5.4440.3.1G.6M.1600.QUAD (yours)
    KC.44601.CI5 |
    CPU.I5.4460.3.2G.6M.1600.QUAD
    KC.47701.CI7 |
    CPU.i7-4770.3.4G.8M.1600FSB.HASWELL
    KC.47901.CI7 |
    CPU.i7.4790.LGA.84W.Haswell
I'm not sure that you'll gain in performance.

If I understand correctly, I have to chose one of these to work with the bios correct? If so the i7-4790 has hyperthreading and a 4.0G option that is FAR superior to the current bottom rung i5-4440. It might be worth the upgrade to end the bottlenecking I am getting with my GPU atm and also gain an extra few years on this tower! I thank you for your help.

I also apologize for the late response as I work a lot of hours 3rd shift and do not get to the computer much during the week. If not for the holiday I would not have gotten back this soon... again thank you!

Yeah, the 4790 should drop right in. Don't spend extra for the 4790K since I don't believe the BIOS has overclocking built in, so there's no gain. Eight threads should be a definite improvement over the four you have now.

Awesome! If I were to add this and then upgrade to a better GPU, say a 1080 or something along those lines, would I be able to go VR? I believe I would be meeting min specs for both HTC and Oculus at that point. Would just have to add a SSD for better windows boot and run times.

Check your power budget, though you may be OK with since you have the 1050 already. I agree on the SSD, you'll get a big boost in boot times and most OS calls will bump up faster as well. I'm running my Acer WMR headset on a 1050 without issues, but I'm not trying VR games that would really task it. The 1080 shouldn't balk at it.
