My brother recently was met with this error that said "Chrome OS is missing or damaged." I have the same model laptop, the C720, and it happened to me earlier in the year, but I was able to fix it with a new SSD. I replaced the SSD in this laptop that now has the error code, tried booting the recovery USB stick, and it gave me "The device you inserted does not contain Chrome OS."

The laptop's warranty is out of date and I really need a fast answer, as he needs this laptop for college courses tonight! Thanks!

Nevermind! I fixed it! All it took was using a different CPU to create the recovery media! Thanks to all!

    Hi St8d,
     Try these steps.
    1. Turn off your Chromebook.
    2. Press and hold the Esc key and refresh (F3) key and then press the power button to turn on the Chromebook. It will say" Chrome OS IS MISSING OR DAMAGED"
    3. The Chromebook will boot to Developer Mode. Press Ctrl + D to turn off OS verification.
    4. When prompted to turn OS verification off, press Enter and the Chromebook will restart.
    5. At the OS verification is OFF screen, do not press the spacebar. The recovery process will start automatically after approximately 15 seconds.
    6. The restore process takes about 5 minutes. A progress bar appears at the top of the screen.
    7. The Chromebook restarts and prompts to re-enable verification. Press the spacebar.
    8. Press Enter to confirm that you wish to turn OS verification on.
    9. OS verification is back on and Chromebook reboots automatically.
    10. The "Welcome!" screen will be displayed and you can complete the on screen instructions.

Your Chromebook is now set to factory default settings.

Please let me know if this fixed your computer issue

Your brother needs to do this. I vaguely remember that the recovery app has "C720" as a model choice.  If not, he will have to look at the bottom of that error page to find the model as shown in the image below.

My apologies, the laptop is a C740. If that changes anything, please let me know. The error is still there.

    Hi St8d,
If you tried the previous steps and are not able fix the issue, then unfortunately you will need to get a new recovery media using USB stick as may be the os was not fully downloaded in USB.
But even after that if issue persists I will request you to contact acer for repair options.

It may be a hardware issue.

I tried the recovery media and when I put it into the CPU, it said "The device you inserted does not contain Chrome OS". What does this mean? I put the correct recovery media onto the USB stick.

    1. Be certain to use the model number at the bottom of the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen to create the USB recovery drive.  If your brother is still unable to reinstall, go to next step.
    2. How to enter & exit Developer Mode. Ignore the Crouton stuff. The image of crosh shell is helpful.
    3. Follow instructions from paragraphs 3 & 4 from here. When you are in crosh, open another tab to copy the commands, taking care not to include quotation marks . Ctrl + Shift + v will allow you to paste.
