Hello, I just purchased this laptop, partly because how easy it appeared to install and additional hard drive. I purchased a 5 TB hard drive, that I am now finding out is thicker than the 1TB hard drives I have seen other people install in this laptop in youtube videos. The part of the hard drive furthest from the connector fits just fine, but the end near the connector is too thick due to the plastic beneath it, and I can't re-attach the cover. Please see the attached picture, my question is: is the plastic I marked in the yellow square just a heat or vibration shield, and can I carefully trim it in order to be able to fit in the hard drive I already purchased? Thank you for your time.

    Hi.

Before trying to make a fix and go wrong, personally I would look at another SATA cable, if there was another smaller one.

As you can cut it, you can, as long as you do not touch the golden pins, the so-called let's say that it makes the connection fit and does not move.

The rest is under your responsibility.

    Regards ,and luck.

Thanks for the reply. It's not the SATA cable that causes the clearance issue, just the plastic sheet under it. If nobody else has any advice, I will probably just dismantle the laptop tonight and reassure myself that this plastic is only insulation, and nothing that can't be trimmed. thanks again.

If you need, other answers can wait, for other experts to do it.

The insulator is thermal, it can be removed, as I say assuming you, the importance it has. ;)
