As a general practice, before applying any windows updates (given the state of current updates and their failure rate), and especially feature updates:
1. Install a freeware program like Macrium Reflect and take a image of your Windows drive, and save this to a different drive or an external drive.
2. Save a backup of your important documents on an external disk (this is a good practice irrespective of updating or not).
3. (Optional) Save the network drivers (both wired and wireless) on an offline drive in the worst case event of clean windows install. These drivers would help you get the remaining drivers from the Internet.
These two simple steps save a lot of headache especially in case of botched updates. Also would be helpful in case of OS drive failure.
