Some of the windows updates does effect the sound on a laptop. This mainly happens because either
Windows has disabled your audio device or
Your system does not have the latest device drivers.
Please try the following steps to fix your issue.
1) Press Windows logo key + X key .
2) In the box that appears Click on Device manager from the left panel.
3)Click on system devices
4)Right click on (Intel(r)Smart Sound Technology(Intel R SST/audio controler) and click properties.
5)Then click on Driver tab, If the driver version is 9.21.0.3755, you have the driver that was sent to you incorrectly.6)Click Uninstall Device. You will get a popup asking if you want to remove the driver too, as shown.
