Hi Guys, looking for some assistance,

Seasoned repairer of PC's, Laptops etc... but this has me floored!!

Currently fixing the above mentioned Laptop for my nephew, Laptop was purchased 2nd Hand, at first it booted up fine but then started to freeze and crash, my brother got hold of it and decided to try to install Win 10 to it then Win 7 (Yep!!!).

Eventually I got involved, so I decided to first research the model, find out what the original OS and install that then look at the freezing issue to see if its a potential hardware issue.

So fresh install...Windows 10 64 bit (acer website confirmed that this model either came with 10 or 8 both 64bit) now this didn't work but that was prior to me reading about the bios upgrade required prior to going to 10, so I downloaded a fresh Windows 8 64bit and went for a fresh install....Nope wouldn't take it would get so far and either crash at varies stages of install, I tried a different hard drive to see if this would work and no, re-seated the ram to see if it was loose and no, changed the BIOS from UEFI to Legacy and this didn't work either as I read that can have issues with the type of boot record (MBR/GPT)

I was adamant that Win 8 64 was right for it given the drivers available on the ACER website so kept trying then as a last result I gave in and d/l Win 8 32 just as a test really and with the bios set to legacy....it installed no issues and I did this twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke!!!

So that's one issue the laptop is a 64 bit laptop but it wont install every-which way I've tried!!!

My next is simpler...…..if I go with 8 32bit.....drivers? can I for the life of me find drivers for the touchpad, I have read on these forums about changing in the bios etc.. but that hasn't worked and on the drivers support there are 3 different drivers!!

All help welcome

thanks for reading

For those of us familiar only with the BIOS settings, UEFI is a steep learning curve. Perhaps this webpage will throw some light on the matter.
This webpage lists the same ElanTech driver for both Windows 10, 64 bit & for Windows 8.1, 64 bit. The Synaptic driver is v.19.0.7.34 for Windows 10 & v.18.1.47.31 for Windows 8.1. The Device Manager should give the manufacturer of the touchpad. Then it's a matter of going to the manufacturer's driver page & check if there is a different version for Windows 8, 32 bit.
