What is your ACER model and number? Meanwhile, you can try a factory reset. Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds to turn the machine completely off. Then turn it back on and immediately press and hold the ALT key while tapping the F10 key. A recovery screen should appear. Follow directions for a factory re-set (won't save personal files) or re-fresh (saves personal files but also possible malware). Follow the video below. Works almost the same for Win7, Win8.x & Win10  Jack E/NJ

If the factory reset does not work, there are 2 choices: a) Acer eRecovery Medium, b) clean Windows Reinstall.

    Before starting either option,
    1) sync your browser to save bookmarks, extensions & plugins.
    2) copy personal files (photos, music files, etc.)
    3) make a list of third party software by going to Control Panel, then Programs.

Option a requires less work but will take longer because Acer will have to send the USB drive via snail mail.
    1. Flip your laptop over & find the SNID.

    2) If the label has fallen off or if the SNID is illegible, then go to the bottom of the Acer eRecovery Media webpage, click the "Acer System  Information Tool" link, install the tool & it will give you the SNID.  Chat is also available on the left margin for additional help.
    3) Once you have the SNID, enter it into the search bar & click "Submit"  This is not a free service & it will take a minimum of 2 days to receive the USB drive.

Option b will take less time because there is no need to rely on the USPS.
    1) Create recovery medium from these webpages.  If you had a digital license, it may not be necessary to enter the product key during the reinstall (try pressing "Skip" when asked for the key).  Here's the product key webpage
    2) If you do need the key, they are really cheap on eBay.  The Windows 10 Home version is currently sold out, so the Windows 10 Pro is available for about $3.40 (£2.59).  After paying, the seller emails the key to you.

There will be times when you cannot even boot into Windows; e.g., if your device has been infected with ransomware.  You can "tell" the ransomware to go fly a kite by doing a clean Reinstall of Windows as described in Option B.

An even easier way to blow a strawberry at the ransomware is to create a Macrium system image as described in this
this tutorial.  It's best to do this after all the personal files, browser personalization, drivers & third party applications have been restored & working normally.  Restoring the Macrium system image is the fastest & most efficient way to deal with virus or ransomware.

It's important to run anti-virus & anti-spyware on a regular basis.  Windows Defender comes pre-loaded.

Superantispyware Home Edition is free & fairly easy to use.
