    Ivo17,
Unfortunately Argos considered it "wear & tear".  Rather poor service for £159.99 or more.  It's really not difficult to replace the screen yourself, as shown in this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TpVCQ--hvs.  Screen replacement for my Acer C710-2847 was exactly the same.  It took about 30 minutes, only because of a great deal of caution.  Place a protective covering between the screen & keyboard to avoid scratches.  The parts number should be on the back of the screen, after removing the bezel & 4 screws. The screws are tiny, so place them in a cup to prevent a search on the floor.  Amazon has a replacement for £30.20, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Replacement-Chromebook-CB3-111-C9K2-CB3-111-C8UB-C730-24Y/dp/B01C8YK06Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1537452894&sr=8-2&keywords=replacement+screen+for+Acer+cb3+Chromebook .  The sense of accomplishment will more than make up for the sense of loss.

    Mary,
    1) Diagnose a black screen, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chaoqoebcTo.
    2) Do a search for screen replacement with the exact model number.
    3) Either Amazon or eBay will have the best price for the replacement.

Removing the hard disk drive/solid state drive will not help to troubleshoot the black screen problem.  The video @ 3:05 shows how to test for a defective screen when the hhd/ssd is back where it belongs.  If it is a broken screen, everything will appear normal on the second monitor.  If the second monitor is black as well, you need to watch the rest of the video to explore other causes.  I would strongly suggest that the video be viewed in its entirety.

hello, the cracked screen has like it has insert reboot disc and can not view anything on it. the 2 computer shops told me I may have to get someone like a data recovery place to help me with the recovery process on my stored items..   it  would probably cost $400 and the other is like $700. and can not afford either one of these places. can not afford.  how can a person hook these up to a tv set or another laptop? need any details on this if you have. I can only see the screen where it has the reboot disc and letters numbers combo. on it  I need help.....thanks, Mary Smith

You will need a working desktop computer monitor.  Usually the cable is blue as shown below.

Connect the desktop monitor to the device with the black screen & turn the device on.  If the desktop monitor has a normal display,
the black screen is damaged & will need to be replaced.  If the desktop monitor is also black, watch the video for other clues.

Mary, the computer shops are just being a bit lazy. Unless there is something actually bad with the hard disk then it is pretty simple to recover the data. You just connect it to another computer, and there are cheap cases that allow you to do that. Unless you have decided to just go with a new machine it's worth going through the process of finding out the cost of a repair. You mention you have a cracked screen on an Acer notebook running Windows 8.1? If so you are actually in the wrong place on this community, you should be in one of the Windows sections instead of the Chromebook one. I'll ask the moderators if they can split your messages out into the proper place. In the mean time, do you know which model of laptop you have?

While my 9/21 post awaits moderation...

    Mary,
After re-reading your posts, I think the problem is not a completely black screen, while the device is on. It's a Black Screen of Death, which asks for the Windows Recovery DVD & there is a bunch of letters, numbers, zeroes & x's (error message(s)).

The Black Screen of Death appears because there is a hardware problem or software problem.  The error message will give you a general clue.  If you don't have a friend or relative to give you technical support for free, you'll have to pay for professional help.  The technician must have your laptop in his hands to fix it (can't do it via email).

If the hard disk drive has been damaged, it's still possible to retrieve your personal data; but again, you'll have to pay for it.

Because the glass on the screen has been damaged, the cheapest solution is to purchase a refurbished laptop from Walmart.  They are very good about returns within a period of 1 month.  You don't have to worry about shipping charges back to Walmart if you return it to your local store.

Remember to back up your photos/files when you get your next device, so it won't be a big panic the next time you encounter the Black Screen of Death.  If you don't know how to back up files, it's very important for a friend/relative to teach you.
